“Admit what?” Edward frowned, clarifying. “I offered her the shares myself. She didn’t even want to accept them. Honestly, it saves me the trouble of trying to persuade her.”

“Edward? Have you lost your mind?” Harper asked, her eyes wide with disbelief.

“That’s enough,” Edward said impatiently. “You should leave now. And don’t come to my company again.”

Harper felt both dismissed and insulted. Her temper flared as she shot back, “No wonder Mom is so upset with you. Even Uncle says you’re a lost cause.”

‘What did you say?” Edward was taken aback. Was that really what his uncle thought of him?

Harper lifted her chin, raising her voice. “Let me make this clear–I came here to warn you. Your little venture will never get off the ground. You’d be better off coming home now to make amends. Maybe Uncle will still forgive you.”

‘What are you talking about?” Edward demanded angrily.

What did she mean his company wouldn’t succeed?

Dylan pulled Harper back slightly, looking at Edward with a hint of smugness. “Calvin just said that trying to start a company on your own will only lead to failure. You should cut your losses and come home to learn from him properly. He’s willing to teach you.”

‘Wait, that’s not what you said a minute ago.” Edward sensed something was off. “Harper, what exactly did you mean just now?”

Harper realized she’d spoken out of turn and clamped her mouth shut.

‘Dylan, you tell me!” Edward turned his demand on Dylan.

“Calvin’s just worried about you. We came to advise you to quit before you embarrass yourself further,” Dylan explained.

The more Edward listened, the more wrong it felt. A suspicion began to form, but he didn’t want to dwell on it.

Seeing Edward’s distress, Arabella took his arm. “Edward, let’s go inside. They’re not worth our time.”

She understood exactly what was happening and had no interest in hearing more from Harper and Dylan.

Edward looked at her with concern. “Arabella, this feels more complicated. I think I should go back and ask some questions.”

He’d been wondering why Harper and Dylan had shown up out of the blue. After their comments and attitudes, he was sure something was up.

“Exactly, you should just come home with us.” Harper seized the opportunity.

If they could get him back, they could work on changing his mind.

“Edward, you really don’t need to go back. The company will be just fine,” Arabella said, her gaze steady and reassuming

Edward’s eyes narrowed slightly. Looking at Arabella, he felt a sudden surge of resolve. His inner anxiety quietest, and the gradually

calmed.

“You’re right. I’m not going back.” What if Calvin had sent Harper here specifically to trick him into returning?

“Harper, why are you shouting at Arabella?” Edward stepped in front of Arabella, shielding her. “If you have something to say, say it to me!”

“I’m your sister! She’s nothing to you!” Harper’s voice trembled, on the verge of tears.

“Arabella is my sister too,” Edward stated firmly.

The sister he had chosen would be his sister for life, and he would protect her completely,

“Edward, have you lost your senses?” Dylan put an arm around Harper and murmured, “Don’t cry. Let’s go back and tell Calvin. He’ll handle her.”

Harper gritted her teeth. “Hmph! Just you wait, Arabella. Uncle won’t let you get away with this!”

Arabella’s eyes darkened, her gaze turning sharp and penetrating.

Why Calvin, and not their mother Freya?
