“Oh, so Matthew has been here. How is he doing?” When Robert mentioned Dr. Macdonald, he was surely referring to Arabella–evidently he still didn’t know her real surname.
Had Arabella approached Matthew and Robert even before returning to the Hamiltons?
“He’s fine. I just gave him a good talking–to,” Robert said, deliberately sounding stern.
Hearing that Matthew had been reprimanded, Naomi immediately exchanged a glance with Ruby beside her.
It seemed Robert had scolded Matthew for going to the Hamiltons to end the engagement. That meant Robert knew everything.
“Robert, please don’t be angry. This isn’t entirely Matthew’s fault…” Naomi said softly, coming to Matthew’s defense with a gentle, pleading expression.
Seeing that Naomi was still standing up for Matthew even after hearing he’d been admonished, Robert felt his little plan was working.
Then, smiling warmly, he told her, “But don’t worry. Matthew has promised me he’ll make more time for you from now on.
“There’s no need to rush. You know Matthew’s temperament. Just spend time together and get comfortable with each other. In time, I’m sure he’ll grow fond of you,” Robert said kindly, still holding hope they would develop a real relationship.
Hearing Robert’s words, both Naomi and Ruby looked at each other with sheer bewilderment.
What was going on? Had Robert not only stopped Matthew from ending the engagement but also persuaded him to keep seeing Naomi?!
Could things really have turned around like this? Was she dreaming?
At that thought, the cold emptiness in Naomi’s heart began to thaw into a glow of warmth.
With a stunned, almost disbelieving look, she turned to Ruby and whispered, “Ruby, you heard that too, right? I’m not dreaming, am I?”
“No, you’re not dreaming. I heard it,” Ruby replied, her expression equally perplexed.
What in the world was happening?
Why did Robert’s account differ so completely from what Naomi had said?

“Robert, you’re not just saying this to make me feel better, are you? Did Matthew really say that?” Though Naomi felt a surge of relief, it still seemed too unreal.
She had been there when Matthew spoke at Hamilton Manor. She had seen the resolve in his
eyes.
How could Robert now say he would continue seeing her–even spend more time with her?
That didn’t sound like Matthew at all…
Noticing the doubt in Naomi’s eyes, Robert smiled indulgently. “When have I ever lied to you? Matthew gave me his word right here. If you don’t believe me, you can ask him yourself later.”
Naomi could tell Robert wasn’t joking, but this sudden turn felt almost too good to be true…
One moment she had been publicly humiliated by Matthew, and the next, she was being reassured and cherished by Robert.
This emotional rollercoaster felt utterly surreal!
Seeing Naomi still hesitating, Robert gestured gently. “Well then, call Matthew right now.”
“Call him? Now?!” Naomi was extremely reluctant.
Calling Matthew at this moment felt like walking straight into a storm.
“Robert, maybe… maybe not,” Naomi replied with noticeable resistance.
“Just listen to me. Make the call,” Robert said with an encouraging smile. He wanted to give her some peace of mind.
Seeing his insistence, Naomi took a deep breath, slowly took out her phone, found Matthew’s number, glanced once more at Robert, and then pressed call.
After a few rings, the call connected.
“Hello? Matthew…” Naomi spoke nervously, her voice low.
“What is it?” Hearing her voice, Matthew’s tone turned icy.
“I…” Naomi had no idea what to say and could only look helplessly at Robert. Seeing her at a loss for words, Robert gestured for her to hand him the phone.
