"So, Arabella—was it Mr. Stewart who rescued you?" Alfred asked, wanting to hear it straight from her.
He'd already heard the story, and it sounded about right, but a part of him was still taken aback. The idea of Matthew stepping in to save Arabella—and getting hurt in the process—wasn't something he'd ever expected.
"Matthew saved you?" Naomi's voice was strained, her expression tangled with something hard to place.
She couldn't wrap her head around it—why would Matthew put himself in harm's way for Arabella?
"Yeah, he did," Arabella replied evenly, as though it were the most ordinary thing in the world.
"Why would he do that?" Naomi pressed, her chest tightening. In a moment that dangerous, he'd really risked himself—for her?
Arabella lifted a brow. "What, should he have just left me there?"
Her tone carried a hint of dry irony, almost as if Matthew's act of bravery had been misplaced.
"No—that's not what I meant," Naomi backtracked quickly, catching her own sharpness. "I just... How did he even end up there?"
If Arabella had been taken, how did Matthew show up at exactly the right moment?
Noticing Naomi's anxious, almost eager look, Arabella tilted her head slightly. "He came as soon as he heard what was happening."
It wasn't exactly a lie. Even if Brielle had been the one to call him, Matthew had rushed over. He had saved her.
Naomi's face lost a little color. So he'd dropped everything the moment he knew Arabella was in trouble.
"So that's what you were dealing with this afternoon," Ethan said, putting the pieces together.
Earlier, she'd told him it was something about a partnership—he should've guessed there was more to it.
Arabella nodded, offering a faint, slightly apologetic smile. "Pretty much."
"What else was she up to today?" Frank cut in, his eyes narrowing thoughtfully.
Ethan glanced at Arabella, reading her silent cue, and played it down. "Nothing major. Just some company business."
Frank didn't look entirely convinced, but he let it go when he saw Arabella's easy smile. Something told him there was more to the story, but now wasn't the time to dig.
"Arabella, your father will make sure the Johnstons are handled," Jonathan said, his tone low and icy. It was clear he was furious—the thought of his daughter in that kind of danger didn't sit right with him.
"Dad, don't worry—I already asked a friend to keep a close watch on them. They won't get another opening," Arabella reassured him, her voice steady. "They're about to find out their little plan backfired."
She could tell her dad's anger came from how much he cared.
Jonathan's eyebrows rose. "You set something up?"
He was impressed, and a little surprised. His daughter had been one step ahead this whole time.
