Chapter 11 He Wasn’t Expecting Her Name
Finished
Ryan barely dared to breathe, eyes nervously flicking to his boss. Alexander handed him the phone without saying a word. His expression gave nothing away, but the pressure in the room was unmistakable.
“Should I call Elena back?” Ryan asked carefully.
He never thought the words calling off the engagement would have anything to do with someone like Alexander.
Alexander raised an eyebrow. “Look into it.”
“Yes, sir.”
Relieved, Ryan bolted out of the office. He was back in under a minute. “Mr. Kingsley.”
“Speak.”
“Swiftline just called. They’ve reassigned the reporter for next week’s interview. Miss Sterling is no longer covering it. They’ve replaced her with Camille.”
Ryan’s forehead instantly beaded with sweat. “Should I cancel the interview?”
He stood there quietly, waiting for a reply. Everyone knew Alexander only agreed to the interview for a reason. Swiftline must’ve known it too. Swapping out Elena for Camille out of nowhere–it was like asking for trouble.
“Let them switch,” Alexander said.
Ryan blinked. Had he heard that right? “You’re… agreeing to it?”
“Was I unclear?”
“No, sir. I’ll handle it.”
Ryan left the office and called Andy back, confirming the new assignment.
Andy let out a long breath. For some reason, he’d had a feeling Alexander’s acceptance wasn’t random. Was it because of Elena? That call had nearly given him a heart attack.
But now it seemed he’d overthought it. There’s no way Elena had anything to do with a man like Alexander.
“You’d better not screw this up,” Andy told Camille. “This is your first major interview here.”

Camille beamed. ‘Don’t worry, I’ve got this.”
Finished
It was already past 7 p.m. by the time Elena and Chloe finished dinner. The two girls who had been sitting behind them had already left. Elena paid the bill, and the two headed out.
Just as they reached the parking lot, her phone rang. It’s Nathan.
“Where are you?” His voice carried a hint of anger.
Elena slid into the driver’s seat and buckled her seatbelt. “Just had dinner with a friend. What’s the matter?”
Nathan stood outside the Swiftline building, shivering slightly in the cold. “Didn’t I say I was picking you up after work for dinner? You took the day off without telling me?”
Elena raised an eyebrow. Truthfully, she had completely forgotten. “I wasn’t in the mood. I needed a break, so I grabbed dinner with Chloe. Sorry if I forgot our plans.”
She lowered her voice deliberately, adding a note of quiet frustration.
Nathan, already feeling guilty about Camille stealing Elena’s assignment, cleared his throat. “I’m not mad. It’s good you got out for a bit. And don’t stress about what happened today, okay? Just let it go, yeah?”
His voice softened, warm and coaxing.
If Elena didn’t already know what kind of man he really was, she might have been fooled by that tone.
Her fingers tightened on the steering wheel as bitterness rose in her throat. After hanging up, Nathan tucked his phone back into his coat pocket and turned to leave.
“Hey, Nathan!”
Camille came rushing out of the office, swinging her new Chanel bag like a trophy. She practically skipped over to him, ignoring Hannah and the others trailing behind, and latched onto his arm like she was marking territory.
Her perfume clung faintly to the air, but it didn’t stir even a flicker of warmth from Nathan.
What did catch his attention were the looks from Camille’s coworkers–murmurs, glances, whispers. His jaw tightened.
He quickly pulled his arm away from Camille. “I’m here to see Elena. She’s not around?”
He made sure to say it loud enough for everyone nearby to hear.
