Chapter 10 I Don’t Do Two–Timing Men

As soon as Camille walked out of the meeting room, she felt it–the air in the office was thick with tension. She figured she should try to make a good impression.
“Hi, everyone! I’m Camille. Starting today, I’ll be working with you all. Coffee’s on me—I hope you’ll help me out as I settle in!”
She clasped her hands in front of her, gave a sweet little bow, all smiles and sunshine. Nobody responded. It was as if they didn’t even hear her. Everyone just kept working.
Her smile faltered. Her face flushed, pale the next. Andy couldn’t take it anymore. He slapped the desk.
“You guys serious? Can’t you see we’ve got a new hire here? You’re never this locked in when there’s actual work to do!”
Hannah slowly poked her head up from behind her monitor. “Well, Andy, we’re just trying to hustle before someone else snatches our stories. Gotta work fast, right?”
Her gaze landed squarely on Camille.
No names mentioned, but everyone knew exactly who she was talking about.
Camille’s face turned even stiffer. So that’s why Elena didn’t argue–she was planning to make me the office pariah instead. Disgusting.
Still, Camille had to maintain her sweet and innocent act. When Andy looked like he was about to scold Hannah, she stepped in.
“No, Andy, it’s okay.”
She turned to the room and said gently, “About the interview–yes, it’s been assigned to me. But that’s only because I’ve worked as a war correspondent before and have experience with corporate interviews. I also know people at Pinnacle Group, so Andy thought I’d be the best fit. It’s not like Elena said anything to make this happen. Please don’t misunderstand. I really hope we can all work well together.”
The senior staff in the room didn’t miss the subtext. What she was really saying was Andy gave her this job because she was better than Elena.
But since she’d already apologized, and Andy was standing right there, most didn’t want to stir up trouble. A steady paycheck mattered more than drama.
As for the newer employees–they hadn’t worked with Elena much. At first, they’d stayed quiet because the veterans had. But now, after Camille’s little speech, they started warming up.

Some helped her set up her desk, moved over a computer, even wiped things down. Meanwhile, Elena had already settled into the best seat at a quiet café. With her unexpected time off, she’d planned lunch with Chloe.
Chloe wasn’t there yet, so Elena scrolled through her phone, bored. A voice message came through from Hannah. Elena played it.
“She really thought we’d fall for that sweet–girl act? Please. Everyone knows how good you are. She stole your project and then tried to make you look like the petty one. I swear, Elena, we’re not letting her in that easy.”
Hannah, Bailey, and a few others had joined Swiftline after Elena. She’d mentored them and always had their backs. So now, they were pissed for her.
Elena replied calmly, “It’s fine. Don’t let it affect your own work. I’m on vacation now, and it feels amazing.”
Time and money. For once, Elena had both. And she was finally enjoying herself. She’d spent years serving other people.
Now that she was finally taking care of herself, she realized how good life could be.
“You’re seriously relaxing at a time like this?” Hannah replied. “What if Camille actually gets the interview? She’ll use that to climb over you!”
“She
got the assignment, but that doesn’t mean she’ll pull it off,” Elena said. “Don’t worry, okay?”
Her voice was calm, smooth, reassuring.
Hannah could tell Elena already had a plan—but no matter how many times she asked, Elena wouldn’t say what it was.
Elena raised her champagne glass and took a slow sip.
The interview request hadn’t been submitted recently. They’d sent it weeks ago, and Pinnacle Group had been radio silent.
And now, suddenly, they said yes?
She wasn’t stupid. She knew exactly what this meant.
When Alexander found out someone else showed up to interview him instead of his fiancée… well, she was curious how that was going to play out.
The thought made her smile. Then, from the booth behind her, she heard a voice.

“Tina, is it true he’s getting married? Seriously? He’s the head of Pinnacle Group, and he’s not giving you a single cent? What the hell were the last three years even for?”
The voice was sharp, stunned, furious. Elena’s smile froze.
You’ve got to be kidding me. I take one day off, and I overhear gossip about my fiancé?
“I just heard about it too,” came a softer voice. “Please don’t tell anyone. I just… didn’t want to be alone tonight.”
Elena tilted her head slightly and looked toward the voice.
The girl speaking had soft bangs and a pale, pretty face. Her features were gentle, eyes red from crying. She wore a simple white tee and jeans–like a college student fresh out of school.
“You’re gorgeous, and you’ve known him forever,” her friend said. “How can he just up and marry someone else?”
The girl wiped her tears with the back of her hand. “My family’s poor. His won’t let him marry someone like me.”
Elena was stunned. From the sound of it, this girl had been with Alexander for years. But because of her background, they couldn’t be together.
Elena hadn’t known about this girl before–but now she did. And just by agreeing to marry Alexander, she had unintentionally helped tear them apart.
But more than anything, what really bothered Elena… was that she had zero respect for men who played both sides.
She immediately called Ryan.
“Miss Sterling?” Ryan was surprised to get her call. He glanced over at his boss, unsure what to do.
