Elena could not hear what Alexander said, but within two minutes Evelyn ended the call.

She handed the phone back to Sophia, shaking her head with a half–laugh. “You two really know how to handle me.”

Sophia looped her arm through Evelyn’s. “Don’t be upset.”

Evelyn was not truly angry. She tapped Sophia’s forehead lightly, then turned to Elena. “Fine. I don’t know what you said to Alexander, but forget most of what I told you today. Not all of it. The matter of children still needs to be considered seriously. As for your job, that’s between the two of you.”

She had to admit, every move had a counter move. Evelyn tried to pressure her, and Alexander handled Evelyn just as effortlessly.

In the end, as long as she was the one who benefited, that was all that mattered.

“Understood,” Elena said quickly.

After Evelyn left with Sophia, Alexander called. “My mom left?”

Elena answered. “She just left. Sophia went with her.”

“Don’t take what she said to heart,” Alexander replied.

There was background noise on his end, amplified voices and faint echoes.

“Are you in a meeting?” Elena asked.

Alexander glanced at Ryan and the others in the conference room and signaled for the speaker to lower his voice. “Yes. Almost done. How are you feeling today?”

“Better than yesterday. It doesn’t hurt as much.” Elena moved her leg carefully.

“I’ll come by after work.”

“Okay.”

They spoke briefly before ending the call.

Alexander set his phone down and motioned for the meeting to continue.

Back in the hospital room, Elena resumed editing her article. She inserted the photos she had taken at the scene. She did not know what the masked individual had removed, but Hawthorne Group’s involvement in the deliberate fire was beyond dispute.

After finishing the draft, she began a thorough review.

Stretching slightly, she decided to use the restroom. Alexander had arranged for two caregivers, and she called out for them twice, but there was no response. They were probably elsewhere in the ward.

Her leg was injured but not incapacitated.

She pushed aside the blanket and walked carefully to the restroom. When she returned, a doctor in a white coat and mask was standing beside the bedside table.

Her laptop and phone were there.

“Is something wrong? Another exam?” Elena asked.

The doctor smiled faintly. “Yes. We need to run another check. Please lie down.”

“Alright.”

Elena climbed back into bed. “My leg feels better today. Do you think I can be discharged tomorrow?”

The doctor did not examine her leg. Instead, he pulled a syringe from his pocket, already filled with liquid.

“Are you adding medication?” Elena asked, unease creeping in.

The doctor removed the cap. “An anti–inflammatory injection to prevent infection.”

Elena hated needles. She turned her face away instinctively, and her eyes fell on the bedside table.

Her phone had been resting directly over the laptop logo earlier. Now it had been moved to the side.

Someone had touched it.

The unease sharpened instantly. Normally nurses administered injections, so why was a masked doctor doing it now?
