The man clenched his jaw, casting one last unwilling look at Elena before bolting out of the room just seconds before the aides returned.
One aide had gone to pick up medication, and the other had gone to grab Elena’s meal. They walked back together and were startled when someone dressed like a doctor rushed out of the room in a panic. Before they could even process what they had seen, he was already gone.
They exchanged confused looks and hurried inside.
The room was in disarray. A chair had been knocked over, medical supplies were scattered, and Elena was sitting on the floor, breathing hard.
“Oh my God, Miss Sterling, are you alright?” one of the aides asked as they rushed to her side.
They quickly set down what they were carrying and helped her up.
Elena’s hands were still trembling.
“Call the police,” she said hoarsely.
Her throat burned. After speaking, she picked up her phone and used the front camera to check her neck. A vivid red mark had formed around it.
If she had reacted a second slower, she might not have survived.
One aide immediately called the police.
“Miss Sterling, should we call Mr. Kingsley?” the other asked.
Elena thought for a moment and shook her head. “No. If he comes, he’ll just call the police anyway. There’s no need to drag him into this.”
When she had spoken to him earlier, he sounded busy. There was no reason to pull him away.
Besides reporting to the police, Elena also informed the hospital administration. By the time the officers arrived, the hospital had already reviewed the surveillance footage and examined the syringe she had kicked to the floor.
“The liquid inside the syringe is toxic,” a doctor explained. “If injected, it can cause respiratory failure. This type of medication is strictly controlled in our hospital, and Miss Sterling’s condition does not require anything like this.”
He hesitated before adding, “However, the surveillance footage from that time period appears to have been deliberately erased. There’s no recording.”

The police confirmed the footage had indeed been tampered with.
They then asked Elena whether she had recently had any conflicts with anyone. She did not hesitate.
“Two days ago, there was a fire at the West Garment Factory under Hawthorne Group. I went there to report on it and nearly got trapped inside. The man who attacked me at the scene is the same person who came here today.”
She looked directly at the officers. “He works for Hawthorne Group.”
Everyone in the room paused. Hawthorne Group in Grayhaven?
Why would a corporation target a young reporter?
“The factory fire was not an accident,” Elena continued. “He went inside to retrieve something, and I took photos. That’s why he came after me.”
She handed her phone to the officers, carefully holding it by the edge. “There should still be fingerprints on the screen.”
After reviewing the photo, the officers‘ expressions grew more serious.
“Understood,” one of them said. “Thank you for your cooperation. If we need anything further, we will contact you.”
“Of course,” Elena replied.
At the Hawthorne estate, Victor’s hand tightened around his thermos so hard the veins in his arm stood out.
Nathan stood beside him, his brows drawn tight in the exact same way.
Victoria and Camille sat together, unaware of what had happened. Seeing their expressions, Victoria frowned. “What’s with the long faces? Camille is carrying our family’s child. Can’t you look a little happier?”
Victor snapped. “She’s pregnant, not carrying the crown jewels!”
Victoria flushed. “That’s your grandson you’re talking about!”
Camille sensed the tension immediately and grabbed Victoria’s arm. “Mom, Dad and Nathan must have something on their minds. Don’t argue with them.”
Victoria finally sat back down, though she still looked annoyed.
