Chapter 13 Sister–in–Law or Stranger?
“I’m Sophia,” the girl on the phone said cheerfully.

Her voice was upbeat, but for some reason, Elena felt like it sounded familiar. Sophia… that name rang a bell. Wait–Camille had mentioned her earlier. She was Nathan’s cousin.
“Hi,” Elena replied, stepping out onto the balcony. “Is there something I can help you with?”
“Can we have lunch tomorrow? Just the two of us?”
Elena hesitated. She was planning to call off the engagement with Alexander. Meeting with his family now didn’t exactly feel appropriate.
But then she remembered the inheritance. Her lips pressed into a line. “…Sure,” she said finally.
“Great! I’ll text you the address. See you tomorrow!” Sophia ended the call, absolutely beaming.
She headed straight to her closet and began holding outfits up to the mirror one by one. “This one? Or this one?” she asked out loud.
“You look good in anything, miss,” said the housekeeper nearby.
Sophia rolled her eyes. “You don’t get it. I’m meeting my future sister–in–law tomorrow. I’m going to speak on my brother’s behalf, so of course I have to look flawless.”
She pointed to a display case inside the walk–in closet, hands on her hips. “Pack up that new Patek Philippe, the diamond earrings, and that–yes, that too. I’m giving them all to her.”
The housekeeper was stunned. “Miss, their engagement isn’t even official yet… and you’re giving her all this?”
We’re talking about luxury gifts worth hundreds of thousands–maybe more. Even the Kingsleys don’t throw money around like this.
“You don’t get it,” Sophia said, waving her off. “She needs to see how serious we are. Alexander finally agreed to settle down. We can’t let this thing fall apart.”
She sighed dramatically. “With the way he is, if this one doesn’t work out, who knows when he’ll even think about marriage again. Might be ten years from now.”
She was practically stressing herself out for him.
“Men over thirty only get worse with age,” she muttered. “He needs to lock it down while he’s still in his prime.”

Just then, a calm, cold voice cut through the room. “Who’s getting worse with age?”

Sophia turned around sharply. Alexander was standing at the door, hands in his pockets. She had no idea how long he’d been there–but clearly, he’d heard everything.
Sophia stuck her tongue out, dropping her spoiled–princess act. She straightened up, behind her back like a scolded kid.

The housekeeper quickly stepped in and told Alexander what was going on–how Sophia planned to gift all those ridiculously expensive items to Elena.
“Not that Miss Sterling isn’t worthy,” the housekeeper added carefully. “But… wouldn’t this scare her off? It’s a bit… much.”
It looked desperate–like they were terrified she might run. Sophia pouted, ready to argue.
Alexander shot her a look. She went quiet immediately.
He glanced at the table stacked with jewelry boxes. After a moment… “Put them away.”
The housekeeper breathed a sigh of relief. “Yes, sir.”
Sophia looked disappointed. “But I was going to give those to her—”
Before she could finish, Alexander pulled a box from his coat pocket and handed it to her.
“Give her this,” he said. “Tell her it’s from you.”
It was a navy velvet box. Sophia opened it. Inside lay a delicate diamond bracelet. The band was about two finger widths wide, the diamonds identical in size, perfectly cut and mesmerizing.
She instantly recognized the brand–an ultra–rare designer that wasn’t even available in stores. It had no listed price.
Sophia tucked the box under her arm, then leaned in close to Alexander, grinning slyly.
“First it was that Everlove Heart, now this bracelet… You sure you and Elena just met?”
Alexander slid one hand into his pocket. His lashes cast a shadow under the light, hiding his eyes. “What do you think?”
He left her with that and walked off. Sophia stood there, frowning. Yeah. She didn’t buy it either.
The next afternoon, exactly at 2 p.m., Elena arrived at Riviera Café as planned. The place was nearly empty at that hour. She spotted a young woman in a stylish hat sitting by the window.
