Chapter 14 Sophia’s Gift

She’d only brought Camille because they were close–and because Camille had begged. Sophia’s stirring stopped. Camille smiled politely. “Nice to meet you, Sophia.”

Camille suddenly felt a pressure she couldn’t explain. She looked younger than Sophia, but somehow the vibe felt… off. Like she was the one being judged.

Sophia didn’t say a word. Her eyes moved over Camille from head to toe.

Then she gave a light, almost sarcastic laugh and turned to Natalie. “Why do you keep introducing me to random people? You know I hate that perfume.”

Sophia didn’t care about being polite. Camille’s cheeks burned. No one had ever said something so rude to her face before.

She was wearing one of the hottest scents from a top brand–literally marketed as a “man- magnet.” How could she hate it?

“That smell screams ‘not trustworthy,” Sophia said, wrinkling her nose.

Ugh.

This is the girl who bullied Elena. No way am I letting that slide today.

Camille’s eyes reddened. She clenched her jaw but forced herself to stay calm. She pulled out a small gift box. “I brought something for you, Sophia.”

Sophia barely looked at it. She didn’t even move to accept it–just kept casually stirring her coffee.

Camille’s teeth were grinding hard. Natalie was also feeling the tension and Camille’s sleeve a tiny tug–don’t make a scene.

Camille swallowed her pride and sat down beside Natalie, smiling through gritted teeth. “Sophia, Swiftline’s doing a feature on your cousin, Alexander. I’d love to ask a few—”

“You’re interviewing Alexander?” Sophia cut her off, eyes narrowing.

“Yes.”

“That’s weird. I thought someone else booked that interview already.” She didn’t say Elena’s name, but everyone knew who she meant.

“Are you saying you stole her interview?” Sophia said coolly. “I heard your industry’s super competitive. Natalie, your friend wouldn’t do something that shady, would she?”

Natalie was stunned. Camille nearly bruised her own thigh from pinching it under the table.

“She offered it to me herself,” she muttered. “Said she wanted some time off.”

“Oh, really?” Sophia suddenly stood and waved excitedly toward the door. “Miss Sterling!”

Elena had just walked in and let out a breath of relief. Camille turned. The second she saw Elena, her face fell.

“Elena? What are you doing here?”

Elena didn’t even look at her. She smiled politely at Sophia. “Miss Kingsley.”

Gone was the cold stare from earlier. Sophia’s entire face lit up. “You’re even prettier in person than you are on screen,” she gushed.

Then she reached into her bag and pulled out the gift. She handed it over proudly.

“I brought this for you. Do you like it?”

Natalie and Camille sat in stunned silence.

Is this the same Sophia? And since when are she and Elena on such good terms?

Elena hadn’t expected a gift. She was about to decline, but one look at Sophia’s hopeful expression and the refusal stuck in her throat.

She opened the box briefly. The diamonds sparkled so bright, they nearly blinded Camille sitting next to her.

“…Thank you.”

Elena gave a polite smile and slipped the box into her bag. She’d find a way to return it later.

“Wait–Elena,” Camille asked, forcing a smile. “You know Sophia?”

Elena raised an eyebrow. “Yeah, we’ve met a few times. Is this the Pinnacle Group connection you were bragging about to Andy? You meant Sophia?”

Camille’s face contorted. “I—why didn’t you ever mention that?”
