Chapter 143 Old House
On the day Elena was discharged, she went with Alexander to Kingsley Manor.
Only Walter and Evelyn were home. The moment Walter saw her, his face lit up. “Elena, I asked the kitchen to prepare a few restorative dishes for you, things that help with recovery and circulation. You
need to eat more.”
“Thank you, Grandpa,” Elena replied warmly.
She made sure to eat a generous portion, which delighted Walter so much that he could not stop smili
Evelyn set down her utensils with practiced elegance and said, “When you got hurt this time, your grandfather was beside himself with worry. Your job carries too much risk. When are you planning to resign?”
Evelyn had clearly not abandoned the idea.
In her view, there was nothing about being a reporter that justified the danger. Instead of spending tim on work and exposing herself to harm, Elena could stay home, keep the elders company, and focus on starting a family sooner rather than later.
The atmosphere at the table grew noticeably heavier.
Alexander placed his fork down, ready to step in, but Elena spoke first.
“Mom, I’m sorry I caused you and Grandpa to worry. That’s on me,” she said steadily. “But this job truly matters to me. I don’t plan to resign right now, and I promise I’ll be more careful in the future.”
Her tone toward Evelyn was very different from the way she handled Victoria.
Victoria had looked down on her work because it did not bring in enough money or status, while Evelyn simply believed that once a woman married into wealth, she should enjoy a comfortable life instead of putting herself in harm’s way and worrying her family.
So although Evelyn’s words were blunt, Elena did not push back sharply.
“Alexander, say something to your wife,” Evelyn said, clearly displeased. “I genuinely do not understand why she insists on doing something this dangerous.”
“She likes it,” Alexander replied calmly. “That’s reason enough.”
“You-”
“Young people should go out and build something for themselves, especially when it’s something they care about,” Walter interjected before Evelyn could continue. “Let her be. Don’t micromanage everything
Evelyn pressed her lips together. With Walter speaking, she had little room to argue. “Eine. I understand.”
After lunch, Walter called Elena into the study. “Elena, I picked up a new piece last month. Malcolm had quite an eye for calligraphy and paintings. Come take a look with me.”

“Of course.”
Elena supported him as they walked toward the study.
Finishe
When her adoptive father was alive, he often took her into the city to meet Grant and occasionally brought her along to exhibitions. Malcolm had beautiful handwriting himself and had once collected a number of pieces before eventually donating them.
Growing up around him, Elena had developed a trained eye.
Inside the study, Walter chuckled and said, “Don’t take what Evelyn said earlier to heart. She’s blunt, but she means well. She’s only worried about you.”
Elena could tell that Walter thought highly of Evelyn.
She also understood that Evelyn had raised Alexander alone after losing her husband early, and it had not been easy. Now her son had married without fully aligning with her expectations, so some resentment wa natural.
“I know,” Elena said gently. “She’s just concerned.”
“That’s good. You’re a good girl,” Walter replied. “I feel at ease knowing you married Alexander.”
He opened a wooden case on the desk, and Elena helped him unroll the scroll.
The moment she saw it, a flash of surprise crossed her eyes.
“Well?” Walter asked proudly. “Impressive, isn’t it? I paid quite a sum for this. It’s Autumn Reflections by Andrew Montfort.”
Elena studied it carefully, then let out a soft sigh.
Walter frowned like a child caught off guard. “Why are you sighing?”
She smiled. “Grandpa, did someone sell you this as the real thing?”
“What do you mean?”
“This is indeed Autumn Reflections, and Andrew’s brushwork is typically fluid and controlled, with rounded, powerful strokes and a distinct structural rhythm,” she explained, pointing at specific characters. “This piece imitates that style well and has even been artificially aged, but if you look closely at certain characters, the structure is stiff and lacks his natural flow. It’s not authentic.”
The moment she finished, regret flickered through her. Walter clearly loved calligraphy and had spent a significant amount on this piece. Telling him outright that it was fake might hurt him.
