He never should’ve handed the interview to Camille. She hadn’t even made it past the lobby before getting kicked out.

Camille sat nearby, listening to Andy’s call, her face turning pale by the second.

Elena wasn’t too surprised. Alexander Kingsley wasn’t someone who missed things. He had to know about her past with Camille.

The way Sophia treated Camille last time made it pretty clear how the Kingsleys felt about her.

But Alexander didn’t seem like the type to meddle in personal drama. Elena had assumed he wouldn’t care who did the interview.

Now, she found herself feeling… curious. And maybe just a little impressed.

“Please, Elena. Pinnacle Group said if they’re not satisfied with the interview, it’s off the table completely!”

In the end, she agreed. She’d never seriously intended to give the interview to Camille. It had taken her a lot of time and effort to land that opportunity.

The next morning, Elena walked into the office. Hannah rushed over, thrilled.

“I heard Camille got thrown out of Pinnacle Group yesterday. I knew Andy would end up calling you back!”

In the years Elena had worked at Swiftline, she was the one they always turned to for tough assignments.

God knows what was going through Andy’s head, letting Camille strut around like she ran the place.

“Give her hell, okay? She’s been acting like she owns the place lately.”

“Be good. We’ll grab lunch sometime,” Elena said, patting her shoulder as she headed to the conference room.

Andy and Camille were already there. Camille looked awful–definitely not the confident woman who’d been flaunting her presence at the estate.

When Elena walked in, radiant as ever, Camille let out a barely audible scoff. Still pretending everything’s fine after getting kicked out?

Elena glanced her way briefly, then greeted Andy. “Andy.”

Andy looked like he was about to have a breakdown. “Thank God you’re here. You’re heading to Pinnacle this afternoon. Do your best. And take Camille with you.”

He glanced at Elena nervously, worried she might refuse. But Elena just said, “Got it.”

“We still have the prep materials, right? If not, use Camille’s version.” Andy added.

“I’ve got my own,” Elena said.

Camille snapped. “You told me you threw them away!”

Elena raised an eyebrow. “And you said the interview was a done deal. So, what happened?”

Camille nearly fainted from anger. She’d been played. Elena had strung her along the whole time.

After lunch, Elena sent a quick message to Ryan, asking if Alexander was available that afternoon.

Ryan called her back immediately. “You’re coming today, Ms. Sterling?”

His voice sounded… cheerful.

“Yes. Is Mr. Kingsley free? I can come this afternoon.”

“He’ll be ready whenever you are.”

“…Thanks.”

Was it her imagination, or did Ryan sound happy?

That afternoon, Elena drove to Pinnacle Group, with Camille in the passenger seat. Camille glanced around the luxury interior, her chest tightening.

“So Nathan bought you this car, huh? He really treats you well.”

This was supposed to be hers. If it hadn’t been for Charles, she would’ve married Nathan long ago. Elena nearly laughed. This car wasn’t from Nathan. It was a gift from Charles, the family patriarch.

But she played along.

“He’s pretty good to me. I actually didn’t want the car, but he insisted. Said it wasn’t safe for me to commute without it. If it weren’t for his mother, our relationship would be great…”
