“Why are you always defending Camille? Don’t tell me you’ve got something going on with her?”
Elena asked the question deliberately. “I mean, you two grew up together. If you really have feelings for Camille, I won’t get in your way.
your way. I’ll step aside.”
Nathan froze. He hadn’t expected that. For a second, he forgot to stay mad and instead wrapped his arms around her tightly.
“Don’t be ridiculous. You know exactly who I care about.”
Elena laughed to herself, cold and silent.
If he’d had the guts to ask for a divorce right now, she might’ve respected him for at least being honest. But clearly, he wanted it all—his grandfather’s shares, Camille’s sweet affection–and was ready to lie through his teeth to keep both.
“How about this,” Nathan said, softening his voice, “I’ll talk to Mom and ask Camille to move out. Okay?”
Elena tried not to gag, pushing him away. “Then I’ll come back when she’s gone. Until then, I’ll stay somewhere else. No point living here if it’s gonna make me sick.”
She went back to packing.
Nathan didn’t try to stop her, probably afraid she’d dig too deep and uncover whatever dirt he and Camille were hiding.
Elena packed fast and headed downstairs.
Victoria was still fuming, face red with anger, while Camille sat beside her pretending to console. When she saw Elena coming down with her suitcase, a flicker of satisfaction crossed her face.
Elena glanced at her, then stopped and turned to Nathan. “I hope you’ll actually keep your word.”
“I’ll walk you out…”
་་
Nathan said, but something felt off. He just couldn’t put his finger on it.
“No need,” Elena replied. “Spend time with your mom. I need some space.”
Let him stay here and play the dutiful son. Soon enough, he’d be the one begging her to come

After Elena left, Victoria wasn’t done complaining. “That girl’s getting out of hand. Talking to me like that. I bet she’ll come crawling back in no time. Nathan, listen to me. Don’t let her back in this house.”
No one in the Hart family cared for Elena. With no support, where could she possibly go? Give her a couple of days, she’d be begging at the door.
Nathan stood there, stone–faced.
“Mom, can you try being nicer to her? These past five years, who took care of you every time you were sick? Remember when you wanted home–style food from Rosebridge? She went and learned how to make it just for you. You don’t need to treat her this way.”
Even Nathan had to admit his mother had always been harsh with Elena. And if he didn’t have feelings for Camille, he would’ve been perfectly happy with Elena as his wife.
Victoria hadn’t expected her son to side with Elena. Her eyes widened in disbelief.
Camille’s face flickered, resentment flashing behind her carefully composed expression. She put on her most pitiful look. “This is all my fault. I caused the tension. Mom, I’ll move out tomorrow. Let Elena come back, I don’t want you and Nathan to fight.”
But Victoria was already stewing from Nathan’s earlier scolding. Camille’s self–sacrifice only made her angrier.
“Don’t worry about her. You’re staying right here. You’re the real daughter–in–law of this family. That Elena? She’s just a nobody from the middle of nowhere.”
Camille’s expression stiffened. Because technically, she was the daughter of Malcolm, the man Victoria had just insulted.
But she swallowed her pride. Arguing with Victoria now wouldn’t help.
She stepped over to Nathan and gently tugged his sleeve. “Don’t argue with your mom, honey. She’s still recovering. Give Elena a few days, once she’s cooled down, she’ll come back.”
Nathan pressed his lips together. In the past, whenever they fought, Elena was always the first to apologize. That thought calmed him slightly.
“I’ll make it up to you,” he said.
“It’s okay. You and Mom matter more.”
Camille smiled sweetly, but her jaw was clenched tight. Elena was finally out of the house–and she had no intention of letting her come back that easily.
