Chapter 183 Tension at the Table
Catherine kept blowing up Elena’s phone, call after call, followed by a string of texts that got increasingly aggressive. Every message circled the same accusation, questioning why Elena couldn’t stand seeing Camille doing well and why she had to interfere.
Elena didn’t respond. She read through them once, then calmly deleted each message and blocked the number.
The silence that followed felt almost immediate.
Only then did she look up and take in the conference room.
She had assumed Alexander dragged her here just to make things difficult for her, but now it was obvious this was a full executive meeting. Senior management from Pinnacle Group’s subsidiaries had shown up in force, the room nearly filled, and a few people were openly glancing at her with curiosity.
Elena met their eyes briefly and gave a polite nod.
At that moment, the door opened.
Fiona walked in, poised and polished in a pearl–toned blouse and a tailored black skirt, the kind of look that felt effortless but clearly wasn’t. She stopped near the screen and gave a professional smile.
Fiona said, “Thanks for your patience, everyone. Mr. Kingsley is finishing up a quick meeting. He’ll be right in.”
With that, she turned and left.
The room didn’t stay quiet for long.
Most of the people sitting there were men, and once work topics ran dry, the conversation naturally drifted.
One of them leaned back and said, “Did you see her just now? Just got back from overseas and already working right next to Alexander. Not bad at all.”

Another smirked. “It’s not just looks. She carries herself well, and she’s capable. That’s the kind of assistant you want when you’re dealing with clients.”
A third lowered his voice slightly, though not enough to keep it private. “I heard her dad used to mentor Alexander. They’ve known each other forever. There was even talk about the two families becoming in–laws at one point.”
That comment immediately brought up the topic everyone had been quietly curious about, Alexander’s sudden marriage, especially the fact that the bride had never appeared in public.
The bald executive sitting across from Elena let out a knowing chuckle, his expression bordering on inappropriate.
Trenton said, “Come on, you don’t seriously think he already married his assistant, do you? Keeping it quiet to avoid workplace drama. That wedding before was pretty over the top. Honestly, the bride’s figure looked a lot like hers.”
A few people laughed.
Elena instinctively glanced down at herself.
…Do we really look alike?
Maybe a little.
But that didn’t make it any less irritating.
She picked up her water, took a sip, then looked at the nameplate in front of him.
“Trenton,” Elena said, her tone calm but pointed, “that’s an impressive skill, being able to identify someone based on their figure alone.”
Trenton leaned back, clearly amused with himself.
Trenton said, “You pick things up after a while. When you’ve got enough experience, clothes don’t really make a difference.”
Elena didn’t even pause.
“In that case,” she said evenly, “you might be wasting your talents here. A hospital

could probably use you as a full–body scanner. At least then it would be medically useful.”
The room burst into laughter.
Even a few people who had been trying to stay neutral couldn’t hold it in.
Trenton’s face darkened instantly. “Elena, what’s that supposed to mean?”
Elena was about to answer when Clement stood up, stepping in before things escalated further.
Clement said, “Let’s not turn this into something else. Mr. Kingsley will be here any minute.”
Trenton swallowed his irritation. With Alexander about to walk in, he clearly didn’t want to push it. He shot Elena a sharp look but said nothing more.
Elena didn’t react.
If someone crosses a line, they get called out. That’s it.
About ten minutes later, the door opened again.
Alexander walked in, Fiona right behind him. The atmosphere shifted almost instantly.
He took the head seat without wasting time on small talk, his presence alone enough to quiet the room.
Alexander said, “Who’s up first?”
Trenton stood quickly, eager to regain footing. “I’ll start, Mr. Kingsley. This is our quarterly report.”
He connected his laptop and began presenting.
Elena listened carefully.
She had always known Pinnacle Group was massive, but sitting here now, she realized she had only seen a fraction of it before. The company’s reach extended
