Chapter 184 A Public Line
As Elena opened her laptop, Trenton let out a low chuckle, clearly not done stirring things up.

Trenton said, “Now I get it. Clement jumping in earlier wasn’t just being helpful. Playing hero, huh?”
A couple of people laughed along.
Clement’s face flushed slightly as he quickly clarified.
Clement said, “Trenton, that’s not what it is. Miss Sterling has a boyfriend. I was just helping her with her things.”
Trenton’s smile widened, clearly enjoying the attention.
Trenton said, “Already? That was fast. Didn’t she just break things off with that guy from Hawthorne Group?”
Elena didn’t look up from her screen, her tone calm and steady.
“Trenton,” Elena said, “you seem unusually interested in my personal life. Does that mean your team isn’t busy enough right now?”
She lifted her gaze and looked directly at Alexander.
“What do you think, Mr. Kingsley?”
The room fell silent.
Several people exchanged glances, unsure how this would land.
Even Trenton looked over.
Alexander sat there, expression unreadable, a faint hint of amusement in his eyes as his gaze settled on Elena.
Alexander said, “I’ve heard about your situation with Nathan from Hawthorne Group. He’s approached me about working together more than once. Since you’re

here, I’m curious, what’s your take on him?”

Fiona, standing beside him, caught the subtle shift in tone and pressed her lips together.
Elena couldn’t see it from where she stood.
But she still felt something tighten.
Is he seriously bringing this up right now?
She gave a polite, restrained smile.
“Mr. Kingsley,” Elena said, “I’m probably not the best person to answer that. You might want to ask someone else.”
There was no room for discussion in her tone.
Alexander’s expression cooled slightly.
Trenton seized the moment.
Trenton said, “Miss Sterling, when Mr. Kingsley asks you a question, that’s how you respond?”
Before Elena could reply, Alexander’s gaze shifted to Trenton, sharp and cold.
Alexander said, “This is the level of performance your division is delivering this quarter?”
Trenton froze, caught completely off guard.
Alexander continued, his voice calm but carrying weight. “Trenton, it sounds like you’ve had a little too much free time.”
Trenton stiffened. “Mr. Kingsley, I can explain-”
“Save it,” Alexander said. “Review everything. I want a full strategy for next quarter on my desk tomorrow.”
“…Understood.”

Trenton sat down, his earlier confidence gone. Elena proceeded with her presentation.
When she finished, she looked toward Alexander, waiting. He gave a small nod, offering no further comment.
Fiona stepped in smoothly. “Next.”
The meeting ran close to three hours. By the time it wrapped up, it was already five.
Elena rolled her shoulders, easing the tension in her neck, and reached for her things, only for Clement to pack them up before she could.
She paused, slightly caught off guard.
Clement smiled. “Habit. I’m quick with this stuff.”
Since everything was already packed, she didn’t argue.
“Thanks,” she said.
Alexander and Fiona were still inside.
Elena felt his gaze pass over her briefly, cool and unreadable, but by the time she looked up, he had already turned and left with Fiona.
She had no intention of going after him.
She walked out with Clement and headed toward the elevators. Just as she pressed the button, Fiona approached, her expression slightly more reserved than usual.
Fiona said, “Miss Sterling, regarding Monica’s interview, Mr. Kingsley has a few questions.”
“…Alright,” Elena replied.
She glanced at Clement.
Clement said, “Go ahead, I’ll just grab a ride.”

“Okay.”
Elena followed Fiona to Alexander’s office.
Fiona stopped at the door. “Give me a second, I’ll let him know you’re here.”
“Sure.”
Fiona went in. Elena stood outside, and for a brief moment, the situation struck her as oddly ironic.
She was Alexander’s wife.
And yet here she was, waiting outside his office like any other employee.
Then again, this was work.
