“You really are too soft,” Monica said, shaking her head with a quiet sigh.

They were mid–conversation when Monica’s expression shifted slightly.

Elena followed her line of sight and turned, just in time to see Zoe’walking toward them.

Like she didn’t notice the tension at all, Zoe pulled out a chair and sat down. Her gaze swept over Elena, openly assessing, before she let out a faint, almost mocking laugh.

“I thought you had something important going on,” Zoe said, glancing at Monica. “Didn’t realize you were meeting her.”

Then she turned to Elena with a polite smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Ms. Sterling, I’ve heard you’re impressive at work. Monica’s basically impossible to get a meeting with, even for our family, and yet she seems pretty close with you.”

Elena caught the jab instantly.

She set her fork down, her smile calm and composed. “Guess Monica and I just get along.”

That smile clearly got under Zoe’s skin.

She had never liked Elena. And somehow, even Evelyn had taken Elena’s side, which made it worse.

Thinking about Fiona crying on the phone earlier only made Zoe’s tone sharper. “We’re all women here. You don’t have to go that far. The Scott and Kingsley families have always been close. Fiona’s parents are gone, she’s on her own, and you still had Alexander send her overseas. Don’t you think that’s a little harsh?” For a split second, Elena almost felt sorry for Fiona.

Even from abroad, there were still people going to bat for her.

But Elena wasn’t someone who folded under pressure.

She was about to respond when Monica casually took a sip of her wine and cut in.

“Aren’t you a little too invested?” Monica said, her tone cool. “This is between a married couple. So what if Alexander and Fiona go way back? So what if the families are close? He’s married now. You expect him to ignore his wife’s feelings for someone else?”

Zoe froze, clearly caught off guard. She bit down on her lip, hard.

Elena almost laughed out loud.

Monica really didn’t hold back.

Monica dabbed her lips with a napkin, completely unfazed by Zoe’s dark expression. “And stop trying to track where I am. I’m not going back to the Sterling family. Whether they’re thriving or falling apart has nothing to do with me. Elena, let’s go.”

Elena had already lost her appetite anyway. She stood and left the restaurant with Monica.

Zoe stared after them, her expression icy.

Monica had always been… distant. Aside from Malcolm, she barely connected with the rest of the family.

And now she was this close with Elena…

The more Zoe thought about it, the more it didn’t add up. She pulled out her phone and made a call.

“Dig into Elena. I want everything.”

Monica hadn’t driven, so Elena offered her a ride.

“She’s the third daughter in the Sterling family, my older sister. She’s close with Fiona’s mom,” Monica explained.

Elena nodded. “Monica, your relationship with the Sterlings…”

She trailed off, but Monica picked up on it and smiled faintly. “About what you’d expect. Malcolm and I don’t exactly get along with the rest of them. She came to see me because they probably want me back again. I’m not interested.”

Then she added, “Zoe saw us together. She’ll definitely look into you. Sorry, I might’ve dragged you into this.”

Elena didn’t seem bothered.

Her connection to Malcolm wasn’t exactly hidden. If someone wanted to find it, they would. And Zoe, being part of the Sterling family, wouldn’t have much trouble.

After dropping Monica off at her apartment, Elena got back on the road.

She had just pulled away from the Seaview Grand Hotel when Alexander called.
