Sophia hurried over with a bright smile. “What are you doing here? Picking Elena up? She just stepped out, she got a call from a fri-”

“Just passing through,” Alexander cut in.

His tone was calm, but there was an edge to it, like he wasn’t in the mood to explain himself to

anyone.

“Passing through?” Sophia blinked, clearly not buying it.

Alexander gave her a look, the kind that made it obvious he wasn’t about to admit he came here on purpose. Sophia caught on immediately and decided not to push.

“Alright, sure, just passing through. I’ll head back up then.”

She turned and walked toward the building, iced matcha latte in hand, heels clicking lightly against the pavement.

“Hold on.”

Sophia stopped and came back.

“Did she finish her lunch today?”

That question earned him a knowing look. “Yep. Finished everything. She actually had a pretty good appetite today.”

“Good.” Alexander nodded once. “Focus on your work. Don’t make things harder for her.”

Sophia let out a laugh. “Seriously? Do I look like trouble to you? Relax, I’ve got it.”

After she reassured him a few more times, she finally headed inside.

Alexander didn’t stay any longer. He got back into his car and drove off from Velmora Media.

Elena had no idea he had stopped by earlier.

She followed Gideon into the restaurant, and he pulled out her chair for her out of habit before taking his own seat across from her.

They ended up at one of their old favorites, a cozy American bistro they used to visit all the time. Elena had always loved their red wine braised short ribs and maple–glazed pork belly.

Gideon knew her taste well enough to order without asking.

He picked up the menu and was about to call the server over when Elena lifted her hand slightly, hesitating.

“What is it?” he asked.

“…Nothing.”

I probably shouldn’t eat anything sweet right now…

The thought crossed her mind, but she held it back. Gideon liked that dish too, and she didn’t want to make a fuss.

“It’s fine.”

Gideon didn’t question it. He placed the order, set the menu aside, and poured her a glass of lemon water.

Only then did he really take a good look at her.

Three years apart, and yet she looked almost exactly the same. Her long hair fell loosely over her shoulders, her features soft and calm, carrying that same quiet warmth he remembered.

“Why are you staring at me like that?” Elena teased, raising a brow. “What, it’s been so long you think I’ve put on weight?”

She had always been relaxed around him.

To her, Gideon was family.

“Honestly, it wouldn’t be a bad thing if you had,” Gideon said, a faint smile tugging at his lips, though the concern in his eyes was impossible to miss.

“Why didn’t you tell me about you and Nathan?”

He had been busy since returning, deliberately avoiding anything about her, until he accidentally saw online that she and Nathan had broken up.

Elena took a sip of her drink, wrapping her hands around the glass. “There’s nothing worth talking about. It’s not exactly a great story.”

“I told you before, you can come to me with anything.”

Gideon’s voice softened, but there was weight behind it. “Or did you forget?”

She leaned forward slightly, mimicking his tone with a playful smile. “Elena, your parents may be gone, but your professor and I are still your family. If anyone ever hurts you, you tell me. Got it?”

She grinned, dimples showing. “See? I didn’t forget a word.”

Gideon let out a quiet, helpless laugh. “Yeah, you remember it. You just never follow through. That’s on me too. I’ve been too busy and didn’t pay enough attention.”

“Don’t say that,” Elena said quickly, waving her hand. “Those weren’t exactly things worth announcing to everyone. Why make people worry over something negative? Besides, I’m doing pretty well now.”

She didn’t want to burden anyone.
