Sham Marriage Quit, Real Heiress Strikes Back
Chapter 244 One Step Back
Finished
After she finished speaking, the girl no longer looked at Elena. Her gaze drifted past the rooftop edge, down toward the distant street below.
She slowly closed her eyes, and one hand lifted slightly, as if testing the air.
“Hey, hold on!”
she
saw that subtle shift, she called out, her voice cutting
Elena’s heart lurched into her throat. The moment through the tension before she could even think twice.
The girl paused and turned back, confusion flickering across her face. “What?”
Elena forced herself to sound casual, even as her pulse raced. “The orange you gave me earlier, it was actually really good. I didn’t feel as nauseous after eating it. Where did you buy it?”
The staff nearby exchanged looks, clearly stunned.
Of all things to say right now, she chose to talk about fruit?
Elena ignored them entirely. Keep her talking. Keep her grounded. Just buy time.
“I just got it from a grocery store,” the girl replied softly.
“Which one?” Elena pressed gently, inching a little closer as she spoke, her movements slow and deliberate. “Every time I buy oranges, they’re way too sour. I can’t stand that.”
She lowered herself to sit a few yards away, keeping her posture relaxed, as if this were nothing more than a casual conversation.
“Let’s just talk for a bit,” she continued, her tone warm and steady. “Honestly, I haven’t been feeling great lately either. My doctor says pregnancy hormones can really mess with your mood. I don’t even know if
that’s what’s going on with me, but it’s been rough.”
The girl seemed to soften slightly, her attention shifting. “It’s normal. It gets better after the first trimester. Pregnancy… it’s hard. But you’re really pretty. Your baby’s probably going to be adorable. I hope everything goes smoothly when it’s born.”
Her voice gradually faded, and her hand drifted down to rest gently on her stomach.
“Not like mine,” she murmured. “No one’s looking forward to this baby except me. Maybe… maybe I should just take it with me.
Elena immediately shook her head, her voice firm but gentle. “That’s not true.”
She leaned forward slightly, meeting the girl’s eyes.
“You’re looking forward to this baby, and that’s what matters. It’s your child. It doesn’t care what anyone else thinks. Right now, the only thing that matters to that baby is whether you want it.”
The girl’s expression wavered, her hand unconsciou
stroking her stomach.

“I don’t know what you’ve been through,” Elena continued, her voice calm and steady, “and I won’t pretend I do. But right now, it’s not just you anymore. I’m here too.”
She held her gaze, unwavering.
“I’m honestly curious what your baby’s going to look like,” she added, allowing a faint smile. “And I can tell you already care a lot. You’re going to love that baby. When that’s there, everything else doesn’t feel as overwhelming.”
“Really?” the girl asked quietly, something fragile returning to her eyes.
“Yeah, really.” Elena nodded without hesitation. “But sitting there is dangerous. Can you come over here ation. But siting there is dangerous. Can you come over here first? We can keep talking.”
The girl hesitated, biting her lower lip.
Then, slowly, she reached her hand out toward Elena.
The tension in Elena’s chest eased, just slightly. She rose carefully and stepped forward, closing the distance inch by inch.
Less than a few feet now. Almost there. Then suddenly, voices erupted from below.
“Is she jumping or what? This is taking forever!”
“Yeah, seriously, what is this, some kind of stunt?”
A burst of laughter followed. Elena’s expression stiffened.
The girl’s outstretched hand faltered, then slowly withdrew.
She looked at Elena, a faint, tired smile touching her lips. Thank you
Then she turned without hesitation.
A scream rose from the crowd below.
Elena didn’t think. She lunged forward and grabbed the girl’s wrist with all her strength. The sudden force nearly pulled her over the edge as well, her footing slipping for a split second.
At that exact
moment, the firefighters rushed in.
They grabbed hold, anchoring both of them, and together they hauled the girl back onto the rooftop.
“Let me go! Just let me die!” the girl cried, struggling violently.
Then suddenly, her body stiffened. Her face drained of color.
“My stomach… it hurts…”
Elena ignored the sharp pain shooting through her own arm and glanced down. The girl’s dress was soaked.
Her expression changed instantly. “He
water broke. She’s in labor. Get her downstairs now.”
