“Elena, you’re back at work already?” Hannah asked, clearly surprised.
Elena looked up. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

Hannah hesitated. “I just thought… after what happened yesterday, Alexander might want you to take it easy.”
A faint unease settled in Elena’s chest.
She picked up her phone and typed in a quick search: hospital rooftop incident.
Just like she expected, the video from yesterday had already made its way online. Someone had posted the footage of her on the rooftop, talking the girl down.
The footage was shot from a distance, slightly shaky, but clear enough that anyone familiar with her would recognize her right away.
So it’s already out there…
Almost as if on cue, her phone
ang
Alexander.
Hannah quietly stepped out, closing the door behind her. Elena answered the call, trying to keep her tone light. “Calling me this early?”
For a moment, there was nothing but silence. Then she heard his breathing, steady but heavy.
After a brief pause, he spoke, “You really had to put yourself in that kind of danger?”
His voice was low, controlled, but there was a sharp edge beneath it that was impossible to miss.
Elena hesitated for a second. She knew how it looked.
But she also knew why she had done it.
“I’m fine,” she said softly. “I was just trying to keep her talking and buy some time. I didn’t expect people downstairs to start yelling. I only grabbed her at the last second. I’m okay, really.”
“So someone else’s life matters more than yours?” he asked. “More than the baby’s?”
His words left her momentarily speechless.
She frowned slightly. “I made sure I wasn’t putting myself in real danger.”
“If you were actually being careful, you wouldn’t have gone up there at all.”
His tone grew colder.
“It’s over now. She’s safe, and the baby’s safe too-

“I don’t care about that.” He cut her off cleanly.
“The only thing I care about is you and the baby.”
Silence stretched between them.
Elena’s grip tightened slightly around her phone.
We’re not seeing this the same way at all.
“I went up there because it’s part of my job,” she said
ally, her voice calm but firm. “And I helped her
because that’s how I was raised. Life matters. I can’t just stand there and pretend I don’t see it.”
She paused, choosing her words carefully.
“I’m not trying to argue with you. But I have my principles. If you’re asking me to only think about myself, I can’t do that.”
Without waiting for a response, she ended the call.
She set her phone aside.
Alexander didn’t call back.
I know he’s worried about me, but I can’t become someone who walks away just to stay safe.
A knock on the door pulled her back to the present.
“Come in,” she said, steadying herself.
Hannah stepped inside again.
“Elena, the girl you saved yesterday? She’s actually a small–time actress. And she’s tied to a pretty big story that’s been trending online. I sent everything to your computer.”
Elena turned to her laptop and opened the message.
A bold headline filled the screen:

She scrolled down.
