Chapter 246 The Story to Chase
Elena had heard plenty about Landon before, though none of it had ever come from official sources. It was the kind of thing that circulated quietly in the industry, half–confirmed stories, whispered warnings, and messy speculation that never quite turned into anything concrete. She had never taken it seriously.
But this time was different.
This wasn’t just another rumor drifting through the background. What happened with Nicole, the look in her eyes, that kind of quiet desperation, it stayed with Elena in a way those past stories never had. If Landon really was what people said he was, then this wasn’t something she could ignore.
More importantly, she didn’t want to.
She turned to Hannah and said, “We still haven’t locked in the feature for the next issue, right? Then let’s go with this. We follow the Landon story.”
Hannah blinked, caught off guard by how quickly Elena had decided. “You mean… actually investigate him?” “If even half of what’s been said about him is true,” Elena replied, her tone steady but firm, “then letting him keep working like nothing’s wrong just means more people are going to get hurt.”
Hannah hesitated, the initial spark of excitement fading into concern. “I’ve heard he’s got serious connections. Like, the kind that makes problems disappear. There were reports before, real evidence too, and somehow everything just got buried. If we go after him, are we sure we’re not walking into something we can’t handle?”
Elena didn’t look away.
“When has this job ever been safe?”
She continued, her voice calm but carrying weight. “If other outlets won’t touch it because they’re scared, that’s exactly why we should. The truth doesn’t stop mattering just because it’s inconvenient or dangerous. That’s the whole point of what we do.”
Hannah straightened slightly, her hesitation replaced with resolve. “Okay. You’re right.”
Elena gave a small nod, then glanced down at her phone. There was still no message from Alexander. For a brief moment, something flickered in her expression, but she quickly shut it down.
Stop thinking about him. Not now.
She grabbed her keys and stood up. “Let’s go. We’ll start at the hospital.”
When they arrived, the atmosphere immediately felt off.
A suicide attempt like Nicole’s should have drawn attention, reporters, cameras, at the very least a few familiar faces from competing outlets. Instead, the hospital was unusually quiet, almost unnaturally so.
Hannah checked her phone as they walked inside. “Yeah, this is definitely being controlled. The story’s gone. Completely wiped. It was trending earlier, and now there’s nothing.”
She looked up. “That kind of be connected to Landon.”

Finished
Elena wasn’t surprised. She had seen too many situations like this to react strongly anymore. Stories disappeared all the time when the right people wanted them gone.
She walked up to the nurse’s station. “Hi, I’m looking for a patient who was admitted yesterday after a suicide attempt. Do you know which room she’s in?”
The nurse looked at her cautiously. “And you are?”
“I was there yesterday,” Elena answered. “I’m the one who stopped her.”
Recognition immediately softened the nurse’s expression. “Oh, that was you? I heard about that. Honestly, that was incredible. If you hadn’t stepped in…” She shook her head and turned to the computer. “Give me a second.”
After a quick search, she said, “Room 12, maternity ward.
“Thank you.”
Upstairs, the atmosphere shifted again.
“Excuse me, where’s Room 12?” Elena asked another nurse.
The nurse frowned and gestured toward the end of the hallway. “Down there.”
Elena followed her gaze and immediately understood why.
A group of men in suits stood outside the room, clearly not hospital staff. Their posture, their positioning, everything about them screamed private security.
Hannah leaned closer, lowering her voice. “Please don’t tell me that’s Landon in there.”
Elena didn’t answer. Instead, she adjusted her grip on the fruit basket they had brought and walked forward without hesitation
As soon as they got close, one of the men stepped in front of them. “You can’t
go
in.”
Elena didn’t miss a beat. “I’m here to see my sister.”
The man frowned, clearly unconvinced, but before he could respond, Elena’s tone sharpened. “And what exactly are you doing here? This is a maternity ward. You think it’s appropriate to have a bunch of men crowding the hallway like this?”
The question caught him off guard.
He instinctively glanced back toward the room.
Elena followed his line of sight.
Inside, Nicole lay

on the bed in a loose hospital gown, her face pale, tear tracks still visible. Sitting beside in her forties, dressed impeccably, her posture composed, her presence commanding in a way that immediately put people on edge.
She was beautiful, but not in a warm way. There was something cold about her, something controlled, something that made Elena instinctively tense.
