Chapter 314 Facing It Together

Elena reached for the glass of water on the nightstand once more.

She held it to his lips, and Alexander washed down the pills with a sip.

The medication didn’t take effect immediately.

But once he’d taken it, Elena’s anxious heart began to settle little by little. She rose and helped him lie back against the pillows.

He looked utterly drained.

His eyes were pressed tightly shut.

Elena stayed seated beside him, her hand gently stroking his short hair and brushing over his forehead. She wasn’t sure how much time passed before she noticed his breathing gradually growing steady.

Not wanting to disturb him, she carefully loosened his tie and undid the top buttons of his dress shirt so he could rest more comfortably.

Even with her light touch, Alexander stirred awake.

“Did I wake you?”

Elena kept her tone casual, offering a soft smile. “I thought my caregiving skills had improved- that I could get you ready for bed without you even noticing. Guess I still need practice.”

Alexander’s brow remained furrowed.

A shadow lingered in his gaze, dark and unsettled.

“What happened to me just now?”

His memories were broken, scattered.

He remembered driving himself home, but everything after that was a blur.

He did recall Elena giving him his medication, though.

“You’ve been pushing yourself too hard lately,” she said quietly. “It triggered your symptoms.”

Even though Alexander was holding himself in check, Elena could tell he was fighting something inside–trying hard not to let it touch her or affect the baby.

Between Gideon and everything going on at the firm lately, Alexander had been running on empty.

She studied his face.

Alexander pressed a hand to his forehead. “Yes.”

She listened to the rhythm of his breathing.

The nervous fear she’d felt earlier began to fade. Alexander loved her. He wouldn’t hurt her.

Her palm stayed lightly against his chest.

After a moment, Alexander took her hand in his. “Would you consider staying at Kingsley Manor for a while?”

“What about you?” Elena asked.

Alexander stayed quiet.

His lips pressed into a thin, firm line.

Elena understood instantly. Her delicate brows drew together. “Alexander, we haven’t even been married that long, and you’re already talking about living separately?”

She was genuinely upset now.

She pinched his arm–hard.

But Alexander didn’t even flinch.

He stroked her hair gently, as though soothing a restless child. “I’ll go see Sullivan tomorrow.”

“Seeing someone won’t magically fix this,” she said firmly. “Alexander, did you forget what I told you before? We’re married. Whatever comes, we face it together.”

She didn’t want him pushing her into some safe corner he’d decided on.

She wanted to stay right here, with him.

He could hear the determination in her voice.

Alexander let out a quiet sigh. “Why do you have to be so stubborn, Elena?”

She didn’t get to finish. Alexander’s mouth covered hers, stopping the words.

Their lips met, tender yet insistent.

Elena wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, clinging as though she needed the anchor–as though the closeness could calm them both.

He didn’t take it further. That simple intimacy seemed to steady Elena, and somehow, it steadied him too.

It was like a silent reassurance, to both of them, that things would be okay.

He would get through this.

“It’s okay,” he murmured against her lips once the kiss eased.

Elena leaned her cheek against his. “Sullivan said before it’s manageable. We’ll be okay.”

“Yeah.”

Alexander replied softly and didn’t bring up her leaving again.

He closed his eyes, completely spent.

Elena slowly shut hers too, but sleep wouldn’t come.

The next day, Alexander had Sullivan come to the house. Elena stayed in the room while Sullivan checked him over.

“Have you been sticking to the dosage we discussed?” Sullivan asked.

Alexander nodded. “Yes. But there’s been a lot going on. I haven’t been sleeping well.”

He was wearing a black shirt.
