Chapter 315 The Weight of the Past

“It’s alright. Just make sure you keep taking your medication on schedule. You should really try to take it easy these days.”
Sullivan gave Elena a brief look before stepping out.
“Did you hear what he said? Sullivan told you to rest.”
Elena shot Alexander a sharp glance.
“He’s overstating things. It’s probably just the side effects of the medication,” Alexander replied, sounding almost childish.
“I didn’t even complain about how awful the medicine tastes–fine, I’ll drop it.
“Go lie down.”
Alexander had intended to go into the office that day, but Elena insisted he take the day off.
“Alright.”
He knew better than to argue. When his wife was upset, the last thing he was going to do was push back.
Once Alexander was settled in bed, Elena slipped out of the room and turned to Martha. “Keep an eye on him for me, will you? Let me know as soon as he wakes up.”
“Yes, Mrs. Kingsley.”
Martha sighed quietly to herself. She wasn’t entirely sure what was going on, but from the look on Elena’s face, Alexander must have been feeling pretty poorly.
Elena made her way downstairs and headed straight for the garden on the grounds. Sullivan was still there.
“Sullivan,” she called out, walking toward him. “Tell me honestly–how serious is Alexander’s condition right now?”
A somber expression crossed Sullivan’s gentle, bookish face. He met Elena’s gaze steadily. “The current medication isn’t working for him anymore.”
“Not working?”
Elena’s stomach dropped.
He nodded. “To put it simply, his body has built up a resistance. He’s been on this particular drug for years. I estimated it likely stopped being effective about six months back. I’m surprised

it’s carried him this far.”
“So even when he takes it, he still has episodes…”
A heavy feeling settled in Elena’s chest.
“That’s correct.”
Sullivan’s words confirmed what she had already begun to fear.
“Is there another medication he could switch to? Something stronger, maybe?”

“Like I said, what he’s taking now is already the strongest option available. If that’s no longer effective, anything else would be even less helpful.”
“So there’s really no other way? Could it be a misdiagnosis? He mentioned he hasn’t been sleeping well lately, and with everything that’s been going on…”
She spoke hurriedly, almost pleading, hoping Sullivan might reconsider that maybe he was mistaken.
If even this medication had failed, what would become of Alexander?
Every time an episode hit, he fought so hard to keep his emotions in check. If he found out the pills no longer worked–with his pride and his stubbornness–he would never allow her to stay by his side.
She couldn’t let him face this alone.
Her hands tightened at her sides. Noticing Sullivan watching her, she made an effort to steady herself.
“I’m sorry. It’s just… Are you certain there’s nothing else that can be done?”
“Bipolar disorder is often genetic, or related to brain chemistry–combined with emotional and psychological factors that build up over time. If medication is no longer viable, we could consider pairing it with therapy. Medicine can only ease the symptoms and reduce the frequency of episodes. To really address the root cause… he would need to work with a therapist.”
“If therapy is the most effective route, didn’t he try that before?”
Elena sensed where this was heading.
Sullivan let out a low sigh.
“We did try it once. The results were actually promising, but…

“He refused to continue with therapy after that.”
Elena stared at him, stunned. “Why?”
If it was treatable, why would he turn away from help?
“The method used was hypnotherapy. I don’t know if he’s ever told you what triggered his condition in the first place. My mentor was his therapist for many years. After he retired, I took over Alexander’s care.
