Chapter 317 A Husband’s Fear
Alexander’s knuckles whitened as he gripped the steering wheel, the tendons on the back of his hands standing out like cords. He was holding himself together-barely.
Elena bit her lower lip.
This attempt to test the waters… had backfired completely.
Alexander didn’t even want his father mentioned.
“Are you all right?”
She didn’t dare push him now.
Alexander closed his eyes and drew a slow, deliberate breath. Almost five minutes passed before he opened them again. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay.”
She knew he didn’t mean it.
Sullivan had already explained to her that with this condition, keeping emotions in check was a constant battle. The medication wasn’t working for him anymore. The fact that he could rein himself in like that was something.
“Let’s just go home.”
“What did Sullivan tell you?”
The question came out of nowhere, sharp and sudden. Alexander turned toward her. His eyes were dark. unreadable, but his face looked paler than before.
That penetrating gaze seemed to see right through her. Elena knew there was no point hiding it. She offered a stiff, uneasy smile. “Sullivan said you’ve developed a tolerance to your current meds. He recommended seeing a therapist-trying hypnosis, maybe-”
“No.”
He cut her off before she could finish.
“If the meds aren’t working, switch to something else.”
“But Sullivan already said-”
“Elena, I know my own body.”
Alexander’s voice grew edged with impatience.
Elena didn’t press further. “Okay, okay. I was just asking. Please don’t be upset.”
She worked to keep her tone gentle, calming.

Chapter 317 A Husband’s Fear
Alexander’s brow remained furrowed. He caught the cautious look in her eyes. “Are you scared of me?”
“No.”
It wasn’t fear. It was heartbreak.
“Stay at Kingsley Manor for a while. Let me handle things. Don’t worry about it, all right?”
“I don’t want to go to Kingsley Manor.”
“Just listen to me this time.”
He left no room for argument.
Pulling out his phone, he called Martha. “Pack Elena’s things and have them sent over to Kingsley Manor.”
Elena knew he meant it. He understood his own better than anyone-the slipping control, the shorter
fuse. He’d already snapped at her in the car. What if one day… He’d already done something once in his life that he’d regret forever. He wouldn’t let it happen again.
And Elena regretted bringing up his father so soon. She’d misjudged how raw that wound still was.
She thought about trying one more time to change his mind, but Alexander reached over and gently brushed her cheek.
“Don’t worry. I’ll come for you soon.”
“I just want to stay with you.”
“Your safety means more to me than anything.”
That was final.
He drove her to Kingsley Manor himself. Martha had already dropped her bags off.
Evelyn noticed the tension the moment they walked in. While Walter was chatting with Alexander, she drew Elena aside.
“Did you two have a fight?”
Elena shook her head faintly. “Not exactly.”
Evelyn was quiet for a moment, as if putting the pieces together. “Is it about Alexander’s… condition?”
There was no hiding it from Evelyn. In the whole Kingsley family, only the two of them knew the full truth. Elena repeated what Sullivan had said.
“He’s afraid he might hurt me. Wants me to stay here awhile.”
Evelyn’s expression tightened with concern. She pressed her fingers to her temple. “He’s right. You should stay. Alexander… he knows what he’s dealing with.”
“I went to the cemetery with him today. To visit Vincent. Evelyn. Sullivan says he needs to start therapy as
