Chapter 318 The Search for Isaac
The room looked just as it had when they stayed there before.
Elena picked up her phone and called Declan.
“Where are you?”
Twenty minutes later, after changing into something comfortable, Elena came downstairs.
Evelyn noticed her heading toward the door and asked, “Going out?”
It was a weekend-Elena didn’t have office hours.
“Just meeting a friend for lunch.”
Evelyn nodded. She still worried about Elena, but she wasn’t about to keep her from seeing friends. Keeping a good mood was important, especially now.
“Hang on a second,” Evelyn said, then hurried upstairs. She returned with a credit card and handed it to Elena.
“Alexander has been tied up lately, and with you two staying here at the house, I didn’t want to intrude. Since you’re meeting a friend, why not treat yourself while you’re out? Go shopping, do something nice- clear your
head a little.”
There was a time when Evelyn hadn’t exactly welcomed Elena into the family. But now, she truly saw her as a daughter.
“You really don’t have to. I’ve got my own money.”
“Take it-it’s a little something from me. The PIN is the date you and Alexander got
married.
Evelyn insisted, and Elena finally accepted.
“Let me call the driver for you,” Evelyn offered, already moving toward the phone. She’d been making sure everything was taken care of for Elena-all on Alexander’s instructions.
“It’s fine, I’ll drive myself,” Elena replied.
This time, Evelyn didn’t push further.
Elena drove away from Kingsley Manor. Before long, she met Declan at a quiet café downtown.
Ever since the Landon situation was resolved, Declan had/stopped shadowing her daily.
“Mrs. Kingsley,” he greeted respectfully.
“Alexander doesn’t know I asked you here, does he?” Elena asked with a slight smile.
Declan shook his head. “Ryan went with Mr. Kingsley to the Sullivan building.”
Hearing Sullivan mentioned. Elena’s thoughts drifted back to Alexander’s recent strain. “How’s the

investigation into Gideon coming along?”
Declan stayed quiet.
She took a slow sip of her lemon water. “He told you not to tell me, didn’t he?”
Declan gave a slight nod. “Mr. Kingsley said he didn’t want you worrying over the details.”
Finobed
Elena let out a quiet sigh. Alexander really had planned for everything. She knew if she wanted real updates on the Gideon case, she’d have to ask either Ryan or Declan.
Ryan was out of the question-he and Alexander were as close as brothers.
That left Declan.
“I know this goes against Alexander’s wishes,” Elena began calmly. “But you’ve seen how he’s been lately. I’m his wife, and Gideon is my friend. It only makes sense for me to be involved.
“You’ve worked for Alexander for years-I understand your position. You don’t want to disobey him. But sometimes circumstances call for exceptions.”
She didn’t pressure him, just laid out the truth about Alexander’s recent state plainly.
Declan hesitated.
Lately, both he and Ryan had been helping Alexander dig into the Gideon case while also managing the relentless negative press online…
“Mr. Kingsley had me look into Gideon’s colleagues at the lab,” Declan finally said. “There’s a technician named Isaac Flynn. He and Gideon were friends back when they studied abroad. After the incident, Isaac disappeared.
“We’re still trying to locate him. Border records show he likely hasn’t left the country. There’s a strong chance he’s connected to what happened.”
Isaac.
Elena made a mental note of the name.
“Keep looking for him,” she said. “I’m going to make another stop now. I’ll check in with you later.”
As she stood to leave, Declan spoke up, sounding concerned.
“Mrs. Kingsley, to Mr. Kingsley, nothing matters more than you. The best thing you can do is take good care of yourself.”
Elena offered a soft smile.
“I know that.
“But in my heart, Alexander means just as much. I can’t let him carry all of this alone.”
She left the café, got into her car, and drove toward the county detention center on the east side of Northbridge.
