Chapter 320 Grandma’s Room

“Just shut it.”

“Go on, tell me everything. I’m sure Gideon would love to visit you in county jail. Oh, and let noe you-after a medical screwup this serious, once you’re out, you can kiss your medical license go

“Go to hell!”

Isaac shouted, then slammed the phone down

“Isaac…?”

A frail voice drifted from inside the hospital room.

He forced his breathing to steady, fixed a strained smile on his face, and stepped back into the nursing home suite.

An elderly woman with thin, silverwhite hair lay propped against the pillows. She looked worn by age- every breath seemed an effort, her face etched with deep lines. When she saw Isaac, she lifted a trembling hand toward him.

“Grandma.”

He took her hand gently.

His grandma, Olivia, held on, her grip weak but warm. “What’s troubling you, dear?”

“Nothing serious. Just some annoying telemarketer.”

Isaac kept his tone light.

“You should rest now, Grandma. Don’t tire yourself.”

Olivia let out a soft, raspy chuckle. “I’m pushing ninety. One of these days I’ll rest for good. I feel bad- you’re always running between the lab and this place… Oh, where’s Gideon been lately? Haven’t seen him around.”

Isaac felt something thick and heavy lodge in his throat.

“He’s… tied up with work.”

“Ah,” Olivia murmured. “Busy is good. Don’t you worry about coming here so often. You work for him. Even if he treats you like family, he’s still your employer. Wouldn’t want him thinking you’re slacking off.”

“He wouldn’t think that.”

“True, true. Gideon’s a good soul. That year you were stuck overseas, he brought me to his own place for Christmas… Isaac, a real friend is worth more than anything, you know?”

Isaac dropped his gaze, fists tightening at his sides.

Seeing his strained expression, Olivia’s smile faded. “What’s happened? Did you and Gideon have a falling

out?”

His lips parted, words trembling on the edge-

When a cool, clear voice cut in from the doorway.

“Hello.”

Isaac stiffened, turning slowly.

A young woman stood at the entrance, a tall man in a black suit hovering behind her like a personal detail. She wore a soft, lightcolored maxi dress under a charcoal knit sweater, her fine features carrying an air of quiet sharpness. Her eyes, especially-when they landed on you, they held a chill.

He recognized her from Gideon’s phone.

Alexander’s wife. The woman Gideon had once carried a torch for-Elena.

After getting the nursing home address from Gideon, Elena had called Declan and come straight over. She had been about to speak when she noticed the frail woman in the bed, clinging to the edge of consciousness. Instead of confronting Isaac, Elena stepped inside.

Isaac shifted nervously, attempting to block her path.

“Ms. Sterling…”

“Isaac, is this a friend of yours?”

Olivia spoke up first, her voice warm with curiosity.

Elena paused.

“Please…”

Isaac didn’t dare make a scene, didn’t dare raise his voice. All he could do was beg silently, terrified she’d lay everything bare in front of his grandmother.

Elena shot him an icy glance.

His stomach dropped.

He watched her move toward the bed, his mind racing-should he try to drag her out? But the suitclad man shifted subtly, inserting himself between Isaac and Elena. He knew he was outmatched.

All he could do was stand there, frozen, as Elena drew closer to his grandmother…

Only Gideon knew about this place.

Elena must have gone to him, learned of his betrayal, and gotten the address. She was surely here to tell his grandmother everything-the lies, the betrayal, how he’d sold Gideon out.

“Mrs. Flynn, my name is Elena. I’m Gideon’s younger sister.”

To his shock, her voice came out gentle, almost sweet.
