Chapter 403 Shut Down His Demand
When Richard first heard about Camille and Evan’s scandal, shock and rage had crashed over him. Camille’s reckless choices had dragged his own name through the mud as a laughingstock.
But the moment he learned Elena had hand in it, fear seized him.

He’d rushed to her office first thing that morning, terrified she’d strip him of his board seat. He’d handed her control of the company, yet he’d never intended to step back entirely from company affairs.
He’d once thought Elena easy to manipulate. Now that events had spiraled far beyond his grasp, he was determined to fight for what he wanted.
“This mess is all her own doing. It has nothing to do with me,” Elepa said, her tone calm, her features completely unruffled.
Richard did not buy a single word of it.
“Who else would scheme against her like this if not you?”
“Believe whatever you want.” She had no desire to waste breath on unnecessary explanations.
Richard remained dead set that she was the mastermind behind everything. “I misjudged you terribly. You’re far crueler than I ever imagined. Even if you and Camille never got along, you still lived under the same roof for years…”
A faint smile tugged Elena’s lips.
“Suppose I did orchestrate it–what would be so shocking about that?
“You and Catherine were my birth parents, yet you endlessly favored Camille. You even conspired with the Hawthorne family to lie to me for five full years. When everything came out, you never once stood by my side. Camille might as well have been your actual daughter. When it comes to cold–heartedness, no one tops the two of you.”
Her voice stayed clear and steady, without a hint of sorrow. The pain had long faded. They were no longer her family, and she’d stopped caring whether they’d ever cared about her.
୮
Richard’s face shifted through a mess of embarrassed, angry shades. He refused to bear the label of a biased father and scrambled to defend himself.
‘You’re the one who kept your distance from your mother and me–how is that our fault?”
Elena laughed softly.
“How exactly was I supposed to grow close to you? I left the only home I’d ever known and moved into your strange household. I walked on eggshells, trying to be obedient and win your affection. I didn’t even have a bedroom of my own. All your attention was locked onto Camille the second she faked a trivial illness. Behind my back, you’d sneer that I wasn’t half as presentable as her. What more could I have
done?”
Her heart ached as she thought of that lonely little girl who’d begged for their love, only to be ignored and

belittled time and time again.

She would never forget the way Richard and Catherine had treated her. Even with Catherine gone, the wounds still stung bitterly on quiet nights.
Richard had no retort left to fire back at her.
Elena knew he would never feel an ounce of remorse. He would never reflect on his mistakes. He would
only brand her ungrateful and heartless.
She had no more patience to waste on him. “I’ve said all I need to. The project will not be yours. This company, every investment under its name—they’re mine. Let’s both walk away with some dignity intact.”
“Don’t push your luck, Elena,” Richard snapped, growing frantic.
Elena’s lips curled into a sharp, cool smirk. “Keep pushing me for more, and I’ll show you just how far I’m willing to go.”
Richard fell silent, speechless.
“Lucas.” Elena called for her assistant waiting outside the door.
Lucas stepped inside at once.
“Escort Mr. Hart out. Do not let him enter this office again without my explicit permission. If this happens once more, you’re relieved of your position. Do you understand?”
This was the firmest order Elena had ever given him. Lucas had overheard every word of their bitter argument, and he nodded promptly.
“This way, Mr. Hart.”
Richard ground his teeth, glaring hard at Elena as she settled back into her executive chair. After a long, furious stare, he stormed out of the office.
Elena rested her forehead against her palm. A dull, heavy ache bloomed low in her abdomen.
Lucas returned after seeing Richard off and noticed her pale, strained expression.
ľ
“Ms. Sterling, would you like me to drive you to the hospital for a checkup?”
Elena dared not take the discomfort lightly. “Yes, let’s go.”
She and Alexander were both overjoyed about their unborn child, and she could not risk anything happening to the baby.
