Chapter 404 Unsparing Cruelty
They reached the hospital entrance just as an ambulance pulled to a stop right in front of Elena.
Finished
Paramedics climbed out, wheeling a stretcher toward the doors. A thick, cloying stench of blood washed over Elena, and she instinctively covered her nose. She was ready to step aside and walk around them- until her gaze locked onto the woman strapped to the gurney
Camille’s face was as pale as blank paper. Her fingers clutched the hem of her dress tight. “It hurts… my stomach hurts so badly.”
Her dress and the white stretcher beneath her were soaked through with dark blood. The gruesome sight and overwhelming metallic smell crashed over Elena all at once. Once Camille was wheeled inside the building, Elena lost all control, doubling over and heaving violently as if she meant to empty every last hing from her stomach.
She only calmed once there was nothing left to throw up. Lucas rushed forward and handed her a bottle of
water.
She rinsed her mouth and sank onto a nearby bench.
‘Are you feeling any better?” Lucas asked, alarmed by her ashen state.
‘A little…” Elena closed her eyes, but the image of Camille’s bloodless face kept replaying behind her lids. There was no saving that baby, not after all this blood loss.
Before she could leave, Nathan’s car pulled up a short distance away. Victoria and Nathan stepped out of
he vehicle.
Victoria paced anxiously, voice shrill with panic. “Is she going to die? I never imagined something like this would happen to her…”
Nathan, by contrast, was unnervingly calm, as if the woman being rushed into emergency surgery was a total stranger with no ties to him at all.
‘Hurry up, come on!” Victoria urged him impatiently.
Nathan moved at an unhurried, unrushed pace–until he spotted Elena sitting on the bench.
Putting everything together from Victoria’s earlier rambling, Elena instantly knew Victoria and Nathan were to blame for Camille’s miscarriage. They’d been capable of such brutal cruelty toward a pregnant woman and a fully formed unborn child. She’d severely underestimated just how heartless the pair could
‘Let’s go,” she told Lucas, unable to stand the sight of them another second longer. “Take me back to the Kingsley Manor.”
“Right away.” Lucas slipped an arm around her to steady her and led her away without delay.
Nathan watched them drive off before following Victoria up to the hospital ward.
Camille was rushed straight into the operating room. Three full hours passed before medical staff finally

wheeled her back out.

She slowly fluttered her eyes open, her hand automatically drifting down to her stomach. The soft, slight swell that had once held her baby was flat now.
“Where’s my baby?” She shot upright in a jolt, only for searing pain to rip through her body and force her back onto the mattress.
She’d miscarried. Her emotions tangled into a messy knot. She’d never truly wanted the child to begin with, yet now that it was gone, a hollow, aching void opened up inside her chest.
Footsteps echoed in the hallway outside. Nathan’s voice drifted through the door.
“Is she awake?”
“Just came to.”
“Alright.” Nathan stepped into the room.
Camille struggled to push herself upright on the bed, her hollow, empty eyes fixed rigidly on the well- dressed man in the doorway. For the first time ever, he felt utterly foreign to her.
She had no one left to lean on, no strength left to fly into a screaming fit. Her voice came out thin and fragile, barely above a whisper. “The baby’s gone. Will you still make me sign the divorce papers?”
He was the only anchor she had left to cling to–even if he’d never loved her, even if loving him had been the biggest mistake of her life.
No flicker of sympathy crossed Nathan’s face. His tone was cold, businesslike. “My lawyer will reach out once you’re discharged. If you refuse to settle amicably, I’ll have no choice but to file formal court proceedings.”
