Chapter 407 Unyielding Dignity

That evening, she arrived early for the dinner. She asked the waiter for a private room, ordered the dishes, and waited for the other party to show up.
They’d agreed on six o’clock.
But by six thirty, no one had come.
Lucas‘ face turned grim. “Ms. Sterling, they’re incredibly late. Should I call to check?”
Elena stopped him.
“No rush. Let’s wait a little longer. Traffic might be bad. Besides, we’re the junior partner. It’s normal for them to put on airs.”
She didn’t care about the wait.
Lucas had no choice but to keep waiting.
They waited until seven.
Still no sign of them. Lucas had called their assistant earlier, but no one answered.
“Ms. Sterling, let’s leave.”
An hour late–and not a single call to
form them. That was blatant disrespect.
Elena had had enough. She grabbed her bag. “Let’s go.”
Just as they reached the door, the private room door swung open.
Two men stood outside. The one in front wore a light gray suit, with sharp features, blond hair, and blue
eyes.
Elena recognized him immediately–the man who’d been standing beside Fiona that day.
“Sorry to keep you waiting.”
He showed no embarrassment at being late.
“It looks like you two were about to leave?”
Elena smiled faintly. “I thought you might not come today.”
“Traffic was heavy,” he said flatly.
Ľ
Now that they were here, Elena still wanted the deal. She said nothing and returned to the room.
The man and his assistant followed. Elena held out her hand politely. “I’m Elena Sterling, CEO of my company. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

The man glanced at her long, slender hand, then at the huge diamond engagement ring on her finger.
He didn’t shake it.
Instead, he looked at her with a faint smirk. “No need for introductions, Ms. Sterling. I know quite a lot about you.”
His tone carried a hint of mockery.
Sensing his hostility, Elena pulled her hand back and sat down. “Is that so? I’m flattered.”
“Heh.” William scoffed.
“When my boss mentioned partnering with your company, he brought up your name. I hear you were with another man for five years, yet you still managed to marry Alexander Kingsley before anyone else. Quite the tactics you’ve got.”
The comment was rude–unprofessional, even. Bringing up her personal life during a business meeting was something no decent man would do.
Lucas frowned, glancing at Elena, expecting her to snap.
But she remained calm, smiling slightly. “So, you’re saying that whoever’s known someone longest should be with them? Alexander and Fiona have known each other for years, yet they never got together. That means he has no feelings for her. Instead of questioning me, maybe Ms. Scott should reflect on her own issues.”
William hadn’t expected her sharp reto
He froze.
“And, I’m here in good faith to discuss a partnership. Are we going to talk about personal matters… or business?”
Elena’s smile never faltered. Her calm confidence made William look petty and small–minded.
“Fine,” William said. “Let’s talk business. I’ve reviewed your company. Your previous CEO was Richard Hart, and under his management, the company nearly went bankrupt several times. Even though you’ve taken over and stabilized it, I question your financial reliability. I’ve already spoken to headquarters—we’ll need a one–month due diligence period before deciding whether to proceed.”
He waited for her to beg.
He knew she’d chased this deal relentlessly, contacting their headquarters repeatedly.
He suspected her company’s survival depended on this project. If she knew what was good for her, she’d apologize for her earlier attitude.
“Is that the only option?” Elena asked.
William raised an eyebrow. “It’s the best I could negotiate with headquarters. Though… if you apologize for your tone earlier, I might be able to shorten the review-
