She rolled over, trying to force herself to fall asleep.

A faint buzz cut through the quiet coming from Alexander’s phone sitting on the coffee table. Her eyes flew open at once, locking onto the lit screen.

The sender’s name read Fiona.

Elena knew Alexander held no romantic feelings for the woman, yet a strange, impulsive urge washed over her. She reached out and picked up the device.

She knew his passcode–it was her birthday.

She typed in the numbers, unlocking the screen, and tapped open the message thread.

“How’s everything going at Pinnacle Group lately? Are you alright?”

Alexander had never replied to a single one, though he hadn’t blocked her either–he’d simply muted all notifications from her contact.

Elena closed out the chat, resetting the messages to unread before locking the phone and setting it back down. She rolled onto her side, staring at the man sleeping beside her, a vague, heavy disappointment settling in her chest.

A few days prior, she’d asked if anything troubling was happening at his company. He’d told her there was nothing wrong at all.

Judging by Fiona’s latest texts, Pinnacle Group must be facing serious trouble–and he’d chosen to keep it hidden from her.

She had no doubt Alexander and Fiona were completely innocent of any improper tief. Still, the stinging sensation of being kept in the dark lingered. No matter how grave the trouble was, she’d always thought she was the first person he’d come to share everything with. They were husband and wife, after all.

Sadness weighed on her, yet she had no desire to pick a fight with him. She understood his reasoning; she was carrying their child, and her health had to come first.

Her gaze traced the smooth lines of his sleeping profile. Even after all their years of marriage, his striking features still made her heart flutter whenever she looked at him.

She loved Alexander deeply–far more fiercely than she’d ever loved Nathan in the past.

She shifted closer, slipping her hand over his. He seemed to sense her movement and automatically pulled her tight against his chest.

He leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to her cheek.

“How long have you been up?”

“Just a little while ago.” She readjusted her posture.

He loosened his hold on her, frowning as he studied her pale face. “Are you still feeling unwell?”

“I’m fine. I probably stayed up too late last night.” Elena slid out of bed. “I’m going to wash up.”

She headed to the bathroom. Alexander’s gaze lingered on her retreating back, searching for any hint of what might be bothering her–but she’d quickly masked all traces of her low mood.

“Aren’t you going to hurry? You’ll be late for work otherwise,” she called from the bathroom.

He told himself he’d imagined her odd mood, rubbing his temples to shake off the lingering weariness before getting out of bed.

After breakfast, Elena rode with Alexander to the office building.

“I’m heading inside to work. Don’t forget to eat properly,” she reminded him as she climbed out of the car, “Gideon said your rest schedule and diet need to be strictly monitored, you have to stick to it.”

“Alright, I’ll listen to you.” Alexander agreed easily on matters concerning his health and his routine.

A small, genuine smile tugged at her lips. “Off you go. Bye.”

She stood watching his car pull away until it vanished around the corner. The smile faded slowly from her face as she turned and walked into the building, stepping straight into the exclusive chairman’s elevator up to the top floor.

The moment she reached her office, she picked up her phone and dialed Sophia.

“Hey Elena, I just sat down at my desk over at Velmora Media,” Sophia answered.

“I need to ask you something,” Elena said. “Has there been any big trouble brewing at Pinnacle Group recently?”

Elena had spent hours scrolling related news late the previous night, yet she couldn’t find a single piece of relevant information online. When everything looks perfectly calm on the surface, disaster is usually lurking beneath, which was why she’d called Sophia immediately.
