Media outlets had been begging for an interview for years. Elena couldn’t believe he had agreed to talk to a mid–tier magazine like Swiftline.

Her eyes flickered. That was her soon–to–be husband. The one she hadn’t even met yet.

Wasn’t he supposed to be sick? So he was better now? That was a surprise she hadn’t expected.

“I understand. I’ll prep the interview questions right away.”

This was the perfect chance to find out whether her mystery fiancé was actually human or a ghost.

Andy gave a dry chuckle. He looked uncomfortable, glancing toward Camille. “What?” Elena asked, an uneasy feeling rising in her chest.

Andy hesitated. Elena had pitched this interview over a month ago, and now that the CEO had agreed… handing it off to someone else was going to look bad. Really bad.

Camille stood up, saving him the awkwardness.

“What Andy means is, I’ll be handling the interview. I’m more familiar with Pinnacle Group and its operations, so it’ll go more smoothly.”

Andy nodded quickly. “Right. Camille knows their business well. She just started, so this will be a good opportunity for her. I’ve got another project in mind for you. Even bigger than this

one…”

He tugged her toward the door, clearly hoping to head off any argument.

Camille, meanwhile, looked smug. She had expected Elena to fight back. But Elena didn’t say a word. She walked out without even looking back.

What a pushover, Camille thought. Got her big interview stolen and didn’t even put up a fight.

Outside the meeting room, Elena pulled her arm free from Andy’s grasp. “If she wants the interview that badly, give it to her. I’ll use this chance to take a vacation.”

She had barely taken time off since she started working.

She used to push herself so the Hawthornes would see how capable she was. But now, she understood something: her effort didn’t matter. They never cared.

She wasn’t going to keep burning herself out for nothing.
