For a moment, the whole room fell silent. No one spoke. Only Crow kept coughing. “Cough! Cough! I–I’m sorry! Cough!”
Denton wiped his face. Then he looked at Caroline with pure despair. “Caroline,” he said, “do you think … maybe I shouldn’t have come?”
At that moment, Caroline almost burst out laughing.
Later, everyone learned the truth. Crow had used Foresight twice in one day. His body was already weak because of cancer. After pushing himself again, he could not handle it anymore. His strength faded right in front of them.
Nathaniel felt deeply sorry. Hè asked Summer–now the head of the military medical team- to examine Crow. She could only stabilize his condition for now. There was no real cure.
Crow kept coughing, but his eyes stayed locked on Nelson. They burned with hope. He wanted Nelson to heal him but couldn’t bring himself to say it out loud.
Nelson disliked Crow from the start. He shot Crow a sharp glare, then stepped behind Caroline. Crowds were Nelson’s least favorite thing. If Caroline had not personally knocked on his door, he would not have come out at all.
Crow knew this wasn’t the time to talk. He planned to wait until Nathaniel finished speaking. Then he would pull Caroline aside and say a few words.
His condition had worsened again. It was likely from using his ability too often. But if he didn’t use it, the army would see him as useless.
He was gambling. Betting his life for a chance to live,
After asking everyone to sit down, Nathaniel sighed deeply.
Then he spoke. “Based on Crow’s prediction, we found a crashed drone about 600 feet in front of the base. This drone is top–level official echnology. It’s even tougher than military equipment from before the apocalypse. Inside iwe recovered an official message.
“Right now, all of Hornvale is buried in yellow sand. The sandstorm is still spreading. There’s no sign of it stopping. According to official data, the storm started about two miles southeast of our base and keeps expanding outward. From the air, Hornvale looks like it has a giant vent. The storm’s center is right there.
“Colonel Sutton told me you suspect it was the doing of a mutated creature. We thought so

too. We sent teams out with the most advanced scanners we have. We even used trained mutated creatures. But we found nothing that could create a storm like this.” Nathaniel paused. “But we found this.”
He waved his hand. Two soldiers stepped forward.
They were holding a dried animal hide.
It was about six and a half feet long. Each soldier held one end and lifted it for everyone to
see.
The hide only had the back and belly. There were no legs. No head.
It was black, with long fur.
“At first, we thought it came from a normal animal,” Nathaniel said. “But when our soldiers approached it, a tornado suddenly chased them away. So we suspect this thing may be linked to the ability–using beasts you mentioned.”
He gestured for the soldiers to bring it closer.
Caroline frowned and stood up. She reached out to touch the hide.
The moment her hand moved forward, her storage space shook.
She felt as if something slammed hard into her chest.
Caroline didn’t know that, two minutes earlier, far to the northwest–on top of a massive rock–a white–haired boy was burning with rage
He stared down at a naked man standing below him. His voice was cold and cruel. “Are those people really that interesting?” the boy said sharply. “You’ve been throwing a fit for days. Disobedient dogs get put down. Should I let my log kill your friend?”
The naked man’s two–colored eyes flickered. He stared back without fear.
His entire body was covered in blood. It was impossible to tell where he was injured. Only his mismatched eyes shone with a terrifying light under the sun.
