Chapter 663 Three Months
All of that belonged to Shane’s life before he “go sick.” It already felt very distant.
That included his obsession with cupcakes.
When he was a child, his family was poor. Later, his father was injured at a construction site. and was left disabled.
The pressure crushed his mother. Whenever she was in a bad mood, she took it out on him.
Eventually, his mother ran off with another man leaving behind only Shane and his father, who was paralyzed and confined to bed.
Not long after that, his father’s mental state deteriorated as well.
A child who had not yet grown up, living long–term with someone suffering from severe mental illness, was bound to be affected.
On top of that, there was no financial support at home. During middle school and high school, Shane became a constant target of bullying.
When he was in high school, he once received a small cupcake.
It was the first cupcake he had ever eaten. He had helped a middle school kid with homework, and the kid gave him the cupcake in return. The kid even told him that as long as Shane helped him with homework every day, he would get a cupcake every day.
To a struggling teenager, that cupcake felt like a dream.
But that dream did not last long. His classmates found out.
Those kids who never had to worry about food or money started mocking him. They threw the 10 dollars meant for a cupcake at his head. Some of them shoved him into dirty water, yelling that helping a middle school kid with homework was embarrassing for a high schooler.
He protected the cupcake clutched to his chest the entire time. Even while being beaten, he never let go of it.
Because it was his only meal of the day.
There was no money left at home. His father’s compensation had long been used up.
To save tuition, he ate only that one meal each day.

But those bullies, diose abusers, forced his arms part right in front of him, exposing his unprotected stomach. They ripped away the cupcake he had been guarding so tightly.
Then they stomped it into the mud.
They probably did not even know why they did it.
It was as if destroying something brought them pleasure.
As if watching someone fall into sadness, despair or madness made them feel alive.
Sometimes, that kind of mindless cruelty was the most terrifying.
In that moment, teenage Shane completely lost his mind.
All the madness he had suppressed for years exploded at once.
He killed them all. Not a single one survived,
He crushed them into the dirt, just like that cupcake.
After that, he was sent to a special prison, then to a psychiatric hospital.
The diagnosis was intermittent psychosis and severe schizophrenia.
Later, during his moments of clarity, he sometimes wondered. What if things had gone the way that middle school kid promised? What if he had really gotten a cupcake every day until graduation?
After graduating, maybe he could have found a job, or gone to college and worked part–tim
Maybe everything would have been different.
That was why cupcakes became his obsession. They became a key buried in his broken mind.
A key that unlocked another spiral of madness after the apocalypse.
And now, he had suddenly woken up. He was not used to it yet.
Shane sat quietly on the bed for the entire afternoon without saying a word.
Beside him was an empty plate. The cupcake he had just eaten was gone.
Caroline did not interfere at first. But when evening came, she could not hold back anymore.
She walked over and patted his shoulder. “Well I’m going to get Nelson to remove your stitches. They’ve healed already.”

The problem was that Nelson had stitched a fish shape onto the back of his head while
distracted
If the stitches stayed in and left a scar, it would be pretty ridiculous.
Anyone walking around with a fish on the back of their head would look unintentionally funny.
Caroline had just turned to leave when Shane suddenly grabbed her.
Her whole body tensed instantly.
Even though Nelson said Shane was cured and could communicate normally, she still remembered just how dangerous he could be.
“Three months. I remembered it. Three months. That man said if you didn’t go find him by then, he would destroy the entire world,” Shane said quietly.
Caroline frowned and looked at him. “Tell me everything.”
Shane told her everything he knew.
As she listened, her thoughts raced.
In that moment, many things suddenly clicked into place. Her rebirth. The storage system. The apocalypse itself.
“We need to go to the desert,” she said.
At that moment, she made up her mind completely.
There were still a little over two months left before the three–month deadline.
