On top of that, he held the rank of lieutenant. Before the apocalypse, that would’ve meant a bright future.

Cristian had already picked the landing spot.

They were far from Hornvale now. The place was a military resupply pointan old gas station. that had been recovered and reused.

Cristian quietly went to refuel the helicopter, while Caroline and the others got busy doing something else. They pulled out the eagle, built a fire, and started roasting it.

The eagle was huge, about the size of four regular roosters. No wonder Caroline and Tyler had panicked earlier. When Cristian came back with it seconds after jumping out, their jaws nearly hit the ground.

The meat cooked quickly. Tyler handled the roasting, flipping it and adding plenty of his secret spices.

Caroline also took out some fresh vegetables from her space. Using the leftover heat from the fire, she stirfried two simple dishes and roasted a few sweet potatoes and regular potatoes as well.

Overall, it was a pretty lavish meal.

But just as they finished setting everything out, they heard footsteps nearby.

An old man appeared, looking to be in his 60s or 70s, limping as he walked.

He was clearly drawn by the smell of meat, but Caroline noticed Cristian frown slightly.

He didn’t say anything, but Caroline understoodthat old man shouldn’t be here.

When they landed, Caroline had already scanned the area.

The place was mostly ruins. The gas station was hidden among debris, its entrance carefully concealed.

It was blocked off with rubble and debris, making it nearly impossible to discover by accident.

If Caroline wasn’t mistaken, the military had recovered this gas station, but they never intended to use it as a longterm supply point. Cristian would probably refuel here once or twice, then abandon it.

A longterm fuel station was too easy to target.

It was safer to salvage one, use it, and abandon it.

The helicopter sat on a flat platform, with the fuel hose pulled from beneath the rubble.

There were no nearby buildings, no shelters, and no obvious places to hide or scavenge for supplies. An old man appearing out of nowhere felt wrong.

No one should be around here. The city’s people were all moved into shelters,” Cristian said, seeing Caroline’s confusion.

And this area is restricted.

That meant if the old man wasn’t from a shelter, he came from somewhere else.

And if he were from a shelter, then he’d broken the rules.

Either way, anyone showing up here during the apocalypse was suspicious.

Please can I have a bite?

As he spoke, the old man stared greedily at the roasted eagle. Hunger filled his eyes, drool slipping from his mouth.

Caroline and Tyler exchanged a glance, both clearly on guard.

Tyler’s face hardened. His presence pressed down like a weight, making it hard for the old man to breathe.

Under Tyler’s gaze, the old man stepped back, but his eyes stayed locked on the meat. He kept swallowing.

I I haven’t eaten meat since the apocalypse. Just one bite. Please.

Even as he said that, the foot he’d pulled back crept forward again. The smell seemed to drown out his fear.

Without a word, Tyler raised his hand and released his ability. Metallic thread snapped out, and five short blades stabbed into the ground at the man’s feet. The warning was clear. One more step meant death.

The old man collapsed in shock, as if he’d suddenly snapped back to his senses.

After a long moment, he stammered, I I’m not eating. Pplease let me go.
