Chapter 693 An Old Friend
Just then, a rustling sound came from behind them.

Caroline and Tyler, with Raven covering the flank, struck the Sea Folk from both sides.
But their attacks didn’t leave any real marks.
Caroline saw that where Tyler’s bone knife had slashed the Sea Folk, some scales had shattered.
But that was all–the Sea Folk wasn’t actually hurt.
Caroline tried to use her ability, but wherever there were scales, she couldn’t control the liquid inside the Sea Folk’s body.
When the ice blade struck the woman, it didn’t scare her at all. In fact, Caroline even saw a hint of excitement flash across her face.
In that moment, Caroline felt shaken.
And the way the woman looked at Caroline carried a hunger, as if she were saying–‘Come on, hit me again.‘
Ice was just another form of water.
The seawater was already contaminated, and now no water in this world was truly pure.
But water created through abilities was always drinkable–it was completely pure.
At that instant, Caroline suddenly realized why the Sea Folk had that expression on her face.
She didn’t know why, but a sudden wave of disgust hit her–like she’d swallowed a fly.
While everyone was attacking, Caroline suddenly heard the rustling behind her grow even louder.
She turned around, and what she saw made her blood run cold.
Corpses–dozens of them–were crawling out from underground. Cockroach corpses, rat corpses, centipede corpses, and some so rotten she couldn’t even tell what they’d once be
There were human corpses too, but all of them were mangled and incomplete.

They crawled up from underground and started gathering toward them.
The way those bodies walked was stiff, their clothes all in rags. Because of the heat, some had half their faces rotted off. On one, its intestines hung out, and as it walked, a rat crawled right out of its belly.
The rat corpses were even worse. They were crawling with huge maggots–red, green, every color you could imagine. They squirmed out of the rats‘ eye sockets and mouths.
A gust of wind blew past, carrying the stench of rot that was enough to make anyone pass out.
“So this is the ability to control corpses?”
Caroline muttered.
Then, Caroline suddenly saw a familiar face among the shambling human corpses.
Even with half her face sloughed off, her body wasted down to sticks, and her clothes in tatters, Caroline still recognized her at a glance.
It was Zoe.
Zoe had been Caroline’s classmate in college.
Back before the apocalypse, she was the one who’d helped Caroline catch Jonathan cheating.
Caroline had brought her some supplies before everything collapsed.
But Zoe was a naive girl. She posted it on social media without thinking much. Even though she deleted the post after Caroline warned her, a lot of people still saw it.
After that, Caroline never heard from her again.
She never tried to look for her.
After all, she and Zoe hadn’t been that close before. Caroline helped her out, bought her some supplies, and warned her to be careful.
She figured they were even.
After Hornvale’s shelter and base were set up, Zoe occasionally crossed her mind.
But they’d never met again.
Caroline just assumed Zoe must have died long ago.

She never imagined she’d see Zoe again–especially being so far from Hornvale and after all these years.
Although it was just Zoe’s corpse, it was still hard to believe.
