Chapter 23 A Lesson in Fear
A knowing smile touched Henry’s lips, neither a confirmation nor a denial. He asked, “If what they’ve done gets exposed, how many years would they get in prison?”
Ethan was the son of a billion-dollar company owner. There was no way he’d be buddies with scum like that. That had to be a joke.
“Probably life without parole. Forget the old stuff. Just recently, they teamed up with folks from Horizon Architects. They tampered with a project and pocketed millions. They turned it into a total scam. If it comes out, the fallout would be unimaginable,” William
said.
Henry’s heart skipped a beat. It actually involved Horizon Architects.
He asked, “A Horizon Architects project? The Southward Nursing Home?”
William seemed unsure. “I don’t know. I overheard it. I don’t have any proof.”
Even so, Henry was pretty sure it was the Southward Nursing Home. These guys are ruthless, he thought. It was a government contract turned into a house of cards. If it passed inspection and seniors moved in, a collapse would mean countless deaths and injuries. No one could handle the consequences.
Horizon Architects would go under. As the owner, Selena would end up behind bars.
No wonder a promising company with this big project was up for sale right now. Selena was totally getting played without knowing
Henry realized Ethan would stop at nothing to crush rivals. His hands were dirty, feeding off others’ misery.
“Take my advice. If you don’t have connections, drop it. Those guys are vicious. You can’t afford to cross them,” William said, seeing him quiet.
Henry smiled. He wouldn’t spill his thoughts, of course.
He said, “Alright. I’ve got what I need. I’ll issue a letter of leniency. Watch yourself from now on. You still have time left, do you want to see your daughter?”
William gave a bitter smile. “Don’t bother, she hates me. She doesn’t want to see me and I don’t have the guts to see her either.” Henry nodded. Rosalie pushed the wheelchair out of the visiting room.
Outside the visiting room, Anna hadn’t left yet.
After leaving the prison, Anna whispered, “Can you take me to Danny’s place now?”
Henry shook his head. “I’ve changed my mind.”
“What?”
Anna exclaimed, her face pale with terror.
She was lost and terrified. This cold-hearted monster knew cops too. It felt like she was falling into an abyss with no way out.
