After Henry dropped Anna off at school, he went straight to her homeroom teacher to sign her up for dorm living.
Her teacher, Eliana Vikane, was a woman in her 40s. She frowned and said, “Anna skipped class for four days without a reason. We couldn’t reach her parents. The school board has already been talking about recommending expulsion.”
Henry quickly put on a polite smile. “Hello, Ms. Vikane. I’m Anna’s brother, Henry. I’m really sorry she caused you trouble. I’ve already given her a good talking-to. Could you please give her another chance?”
Eliana glanced at Anna, who was standing behind him nervously, then thought for a moment. “With her grades, if she really studies hard, she might not make the Ivy League, but she could definitely get into a Tier 1 research university. This time, I’ll put a mark on her record and issue a public notice. But this is the last warning.”
“Thank you so much! Let me give you my number. Since Anna will be living here at school, if there’s ever an issue, please call me right away. I really appreciate your help.”
Anna looked at Henry, smiling and apologizing, and her heart felt tangled. How could this cold-blooded demon also have this side to him?
She returned to class.
“Look, she’s back. Didn’t people say she ran off with some gang leader?”
“More like he got tired of her. Look at her face all bruised up-someone must’ve beaten her.”
“Shh! Don’t let her hear you. Careful, or she’ll have someone rough you up. Everyone knows her dad’s tied to the mob …”
By the end of the morning, Anna felt like her skin had grown tougher. Compared to that demon uncle, the kids’ cruel gossip barely touched her anymore.
Now the school actually felt like a safe haven. She prayed she wouldn’t have to see that demon ever again.
That afternoon, Anna walked into the cafeteria alone.
“Hey, did you hear? Someone loaded 20 grand onto their meal card today.”
“No way! Even if they emptied the cafeteria and the school store, they couldn’t spend that much.”
“That’s not adding money. That’s investing!”
Anna muttered under her breath, “Idiots.”
She grabbed her tray of food and swiped her card.
Beep! “$12.50 deducted. Balance: $19,987.50”
The whole room went quiet,
Everyone turned to look at her, stunned.
Anna froze. She realized she was the idiot they’d been talking about. Her face went bright red, and she rushed off with her tray.
