An envelope was tossed onto the table closest to the door. The messenger didn’t show their face, quickly leaving for the next
stop.
“They’re promoting paperless billing now. Why do you still ask for an itemized statement?” the birdfolk said.
“I like the feeling of holding something solid. I guess I’m old–fashioned.” Russell walked over, picked up the envelope, and slowly opened it.
Andrea had been standing there for ages without the customer ordering anything, so at least she wasn’t busy.
But she couldn’t just stand there doing nothing, so she kept refilling his water.
She listened carefully to their conversation while making sure to stay in Horace’s blind spot.
‘Looks like NPCs in the game world are just like real people–struggling to buy a house even after years of hard work. She sighed inwardly.
“What the hell!” Russell’s sudden shout startled Andrea.
He stared at the statement, then went to the kitchen.
Andrea’s heart sank when she saw him heading for the kitchen. She quickly followed.
Russell was repeatedly checking the faucets.
“What’s going on?” he muttered to himself. “There’s no leak.”
After looking several times, he hurried back to the main hall.
He addressed the customer sitting at the central table apologetically. “I can’t go drinking with you today. There’s a problem with my bill!”
As he spoke, he tapped in the air, and Andrea guessed he was filing an online dispute.
“What problem?” the Birdfolk asked, slightly annoyed. “Don’t try to weasel out of this. You owe me that drink for losing our bet last month.”
“My water bill is 10,000 gold coins! Don’t you think that’s a problem?”
Russell slapped the statement down on the table, looking incredulous.
The Birdfolk raised an eyebrow and laughed. “Interesting, very interesting! Did someone get revenge on you for being so greedy?”
Russell shot him a look and continued, “I used the public toilet for a whole month! I barely drank any water. How could my bill be 10,000 gold? Wait–I did have a bowl of soup this morning.”
At that, he paused and looked at Andrea.
Andrea straightened up. The more guilty you feel, the more confident you have to act.
She met his gaze for nearly a minute. Her honest, unwavering stare eventually made him look away in shame.
He stuffed the bill into his clothes and started digging around inside.

“I’m going to file an appeal with the authorities.”

“You can do it online. Why make an extra trip?” the birdfolk said, rolling his eyes so hard they nearly disappeared.
“I don’t trust it! Orion, take care of him. Don’t give him anything if he won’t pay!”
With that, he rushed out, leaving Andrea and the Birdfolk staring at each other.
‘Where is that kid?‘ she thought awkwardly. ‘Once I get that recipe book, I’m getting the hell out of this place.
‘Oh, wait. First, I needed to deal with Horace. And she was really curious about that thing he’d stolen.
Maybe sensing her gaze, the Birdfolk pressed his foot harder on Horace’s back.
Horace, who had been unconscious, began to stir.
Andrea quickly looked away and was about to head back to the kitchen to think of a plan.
But just as she turned, Russell came running back like the wind.
‘For a fat guy, he’s pretty nimble,‘ she couldn’t help but think.
Sweat beaded on his forehead. He looked frantic. “My recipe book! My recipe book is gone! Did either of you see it?”
“The recipe book?‘
Andrea perked up immediately. “Where did you last have it? Let me help you look!”
“I kept it on me!” He patted himself down, shaking out his clothes.
A bunch of gold coins fell to the floor, and her eyes nearly popped out.
She forced herself to look away and get down to business.
“Can you think again? When was the last time you saw it?” she asked solicitously.
Russell was still shaking his clothes. “The last time I saw it was right here. I looked at it before I left just now.”
“Then you must have been pickpocketed on the street. You know how good the thieves are in this town. Whose fault is it that you had to carry it around in your pocket?”
The Birdfolk snorted. He didn’t look concerned at all–in fact, he seemed almost gleeful.
Andrea couldn’t quite figure out their relationship.
All three were focused on Russell when a sinister voice came from the floor.
“It was her. I saw her steal it!”
All three of them froze and looked down at Horace, still lying on the ground.
Andrea’s heart jolted. ‘Oh no.
She’d been so excited about the recipe book that she’d let her guard down.
Before she could think of a rebuttal, the birdfolk slapped Horace again.

“Did I say you could talk, you thief?”
Russell clutched his disheveled clothes and glared at Horace.

“Tell me. Did you steal it? You’d steal from him, so you’ve probably been wanting to steal my 100,000–gold recipe book for a long time.”
Both Andrea and Horace were stunned–flawless logic.
He’d been lying there this whole time. There was no way he could have stolen anything.
But Andrea wasn’t about to defend him. A moment ago, he’d been trying to kill her.
Horace didn’t try to defend himself. He just kept staring at Andrea with vicious eyes.
He screamed at her at the top of his lungs, “She’s a player too! Why don’t you suspect her? She’s the thief! You should beat her to death!”
“Have you lost your mind? You disgusting Outsider. Not only do you steal, but you also try to sow discord. She has a proper identity token.”
The Birdfolk was truly enraged now. He dragged Horace to the door and threw him out.
With a loud bang, it seemed that it was dropped quite heavily.
