Chapter 54

Chapter 54

With that, Andrea Rowland sent Shannon 30 gold coins as a reward for her trouble.

Shannon replied with a sly grin emoji.

‘Guess she totally gets what I mean, Andrea thought.

After Andrea finished breakfast, the sun was already shining bright outside.

Russell wandered into the kitchen, lured by the aroma of soup. Andrea had kindly set aside a bowl for him.

Following his instructions, Andrea made her way to a house in the eastern part of town.

The streets were back to their usual lively self, as if last night’s danger was nothing but a distant memory for the players. There was no evidence left behind at all.

Andrea spotted a few players lugging burlap sacks of goods toward the docks.

These hardworking, practical players could always find a way to survive, wherever they went.

Seeing Andrea killing time on the street, a player hauling goods came over.

He asked if she was interested in working together for 10 gold coins a day. She would be paid daily.

There was no deposit needed.

That was way more than she would make opening chests back on the island.

Andrea’s face instantly darkened when she heard that.

Andrea thought, ‘So I really did get scammed by that shady broker before, right?

‘How come everyone else gets 10 gold coins a day, paid right away?

‘But I get paid 10 coins monthly, and on top of that, they took out all kinds of fees and made me pay a 100-gold coin broker fee. What kind of rip-off is that?

‘Seriously, what’s that supposed to mean? Do they think I’m loaded or something?”

Andrea politely turned him down and wished him luck with his work.

shook his head. “Young people these days can’t even tough it out in a place like this. Makes you wonder how they’ll survive down the line. Really makes you worry.”

The

guy

Andrea didn’t know how to explain. He was being kind, looking out for a fellow survivor.

She hurried off, not wanting to hold him up.

On her way, Andrea bumped into a patrol team. She’d seen the leader before.

She quickly slipped behind a stall to stay out of sight.

Before heading out this morning, she’d used an NPC trial card, so she had no clue what her current appearance was.

Chapter 34

The patrol team was herding three players along, their hands tied behind their backs.

The patrol leader grumbled, clearly annoyed. “This is exactly why I’ve had it with you outsiders. Every time you lot show up, my workload goes through the roof.

You think stealing in this town is that easy? Why the heck are you stealing fish food of all things? Are you messing with us on purpose?”

Andrea listened to the patrol leader’s complaints, pondering his words as something odd started to creep into her mind.

Once the patrol team was out of sight, Andrea went to check on the stall cart she’d set up yesterday.

To her surprise, every item she’d put up for sale was already gone.

‘Honestly, I was sure my prices were way too high for anyone to bother, Andrea thought.

The stall cart showed total sales of 4000 gold coins, with costs at 350 gold coins and a system fee of 1200 gold coins

That left her with a net profit of 2450 gold coins.

Andrea thought, ‘Wow, this really is a gold mine.

‘Guess there are quite a few wealthy NPCs in this place.’

Putting Energy Boosters aside, Andrea thought it was a rip-off to charge 500 gold coins for a single snack.

Her stall’s balance was 3450 gold coins. It looked like a lot at first glance, but it still wasn’t enough to buy even one refresh card.

Would be nice if I could snag more refresh cards from box openings later on, Andrea thought.

As Andrea clicked to settle the accounts, several system alerts rang out in her mind.

[Giant Rat bought 5 snacks. Monster affection +50.]

[Giant Rat bought 1 Energy Booster. Monster affection +10.]

[Birdman bought 4 Energy Boosters. Monster affection +40.]

Andrea was surprised.

‘No way, you can actually earn affection from monsters?’ Andrea thought, totally shocked.

Andrea laughed out loud.

Andrea thought, ‘Man, this is too good! Talk about luck dropping right into my lap.

‘Did I hit the jackpot again or what?’

But she had no idea which giant rat had actually bought the snacks. So far, she only knew three giant rats.

‘Really hope the one with a grudge against me didn’t come to town, Andrea thought.

After packing up her stall, Andrea headed on her way.

That was when it hit her that she’d totally forgotten to ask Russell about Kiki before heading out.

Chapter 54

She’d actually planned to pick up a quest while she was out.

‘Guess I’ll have to swing by later and ask him. Andrea thought.

It didn’t take long before Andrea reached her destination.

From the outside, the place looked like a high-walled, aristocratic estate straight out of ancient times.

At the entrance stood two giant rat statues forged from some unknown metal, with two one-foot-tall rats standing guard by the door.

Andrea pulled out the pass token she’d received before, ready to see if it would actually get her inside.

She couldn’t help but worry that after her last use, the leader might have already revoked its effect.

But before she could even pull it out, Andrea was startled by what she saw.

The two rats guarding the door bowed low to her, looking super respectful, and opened the gates for her with a flourish.

“Greetings, Boss!” they called out in unison.

Andrea could barely believe her eyes.

“Wait, whose script am I supposed to be acting out today?’ Andrea thought.

She froze for a second, then strolled in looking cool and collected.

With her hands behind her back and her head held high, Andrea strutted in like she owned the place. life’s a stage, and you gotta play your part.

A rat monster, all eager and attentive, led Andrea down the hall and into a spacious room with an antique, old-fashioned feel.

The two massive wooden doors looked oddly familiar to her, like she’d seen them somewhere before.

Andrea wondered, ‘Why does this leader’s style feel so familiar?

‘Could it be…

‘Is it really what I’m thinking?’

Andrea had no way of seeing what she looked like in her NPC Trial Mode. The only clue she had was how the other NPCs treated her.

Andrea sank into the chair behind the mahogany desk. The cushion was so comfy that it felt like leaning back into a massage chair.

While the rat monster was off fetching her food, Andrea sneakily scooped up the whole cushion set from the seat next to her and stuffed it straight into her storage space.

‘Man, these big shots really know how to enjoy themselves, Andrea thought.

She didn’t have to wait long before a rat monster showed up, serving up a few dishes.

Andrea was genuinely surprised to see there was actually a plate of pulled pork.
