Chapter 6
“You leaked company shit. You paid some doctor to fuck with my mom. I got proof. That’s enough to put you in prison for life.”
I flinched. Just for a second.
He saw it. And boom-instant switch. Put on that fake-ass soft voice, grabbed my hand like we were still in love.
“Sloane, I’ll prove today was just… it was a mistake…”
“Just gimme one more chance. Please?”
His dad cut in. Cold as hell.
“Sloane. Enough. You made your point.”
“You keep this up? We’re done protecting you.”
I looked at them. Father and son, playing good cop bad cop.
Then looked down at Piper on the floor, crying her eyes out.
And I smiled.
“Okay.”
Grayson’s whole face lit up. He was about to start with the sweet bullshit again.
But I cut him off.
“Go ahead. Report me.”
“If I actually did something illegal? Fine. I’ll deal.”
“If I didn’t? I’m coming after you for defamation.”
Piper snapped awake and started slapping herself. “Sloane, I’m trash, okay? I’m the one who went after him!”
“Do whatever you want to me… but he really does love you!”
“Don’t push him away… you’re gonna regret it!”
I looked her up and down. My voice went flat.
“You’re this scared of going to court…”
“What’d you do that you don’t want him knowing about?”
She froze. Totally deer-in-headlights.
“N-nothing… I didn’t…”
I nodded. Grabbed the divorce papers. Ripped them right down the middle in front of Grayson. Looked him dead in the eye.

“You don’t wanna sign?”
“Cool. See you in court.”
I turned to leave. Then Piper’s husband lightly touched my arm.
“Hey, so I’m actually a lawyer. I’ve done a ton of cases. Got a solid rep.”
“And I mean, we’re kinda family now… so lemme take your case.”
I didn’t say no right away. Just looked back at the two of them.
Piper’s eyes were full of poison and jealousy.
But Grayson’s face? Just guilt and heartbreak.
Before she could say anything, Grayson caved.
“Just print me another one. I’ll sign it right now.”
That way, I’d have no reason to get close to Piper’s husband.
And her marriage? Safe.
After I caught Grayson and Piper together, I finally put the whole picture together.
Years ago, Piper was obsessed with Everett Cross. But he only had eyes for me.
So Grayson? He took the fall for Piper.
Got close to me. Played me. Made me think I was special.
And I was buying it.
But then Dad got impatient. Got me drunk, tossed me into Grayson’s bed, and trapped us in this marriage with some huge public mess that went
everywhere.
Once I was locked down, Everett gave up and said yes to Piper.
But me? I don’t let shit go.
I looked at Everett and smiled. Real sweet.
“Yeah. Thanks for helping me out.”
Grayson rushed over and grabbed my shoulders. His voice went real low.
“I said I’d sign! You don’t need him!”
I pulled his fingers off me. One by one.
“Too bad.”
“Changed my mind.”
“Everything between us? Court’s handling it. Way cleaner.”

Grayson leaned in close, his breath hot against my ear. “Be smart. You stay Mrs. Hartwell? I’ll take care of you for life.”
“But you keep this up…”
His voice dropped. Cold as hell.
“I got a hundred ways to fuck up your life.”
“Sloane. Think.”
I didn’t move. My voice came out quiet. But everyone heard it.
“See you in court.”
Then I walked.
