Chapter 2
After settling Grandma’s ashes, Mia wandered aimlessly through the streets. When she looked up, she realized she’d unconsciously walked to her old high school.
Through the locked gates, she gazed down the tree-lined avenue and seemed to see herself from over a decade ago.
A frail body hidden in an oversized uniform, following Dominic from a careful distance.
He was the school’s golden boy, his name permanently fixed in first place on every ranking. Beneath his tall, handsome exterior lay an aloofness that kept everyone at arm’s length.
She’d harbored a secret crush on him, like so many teenage girls do-watching everything about him from afar, never daring to get close.
And he’d never once looked back.
Their only interaction during those school years had been in that little alley by the campus.
Mia glanced toward it, then quickly looked away.
She didn’t dare continue down memory lane, afraid her tears would betray her again.
Just then, the owner of the dessert shop nearby stepped out.
“Sweet girl! Haven’t seen you come for dessert in years!”
“Let me treat you-the usual?”
After all these years, she’d recognized Mia instantly.
Mia’s eyes reddened as she hurried to a corner table, head down.
The shop owner brought over the sweet soup, pointing to another corner with a gossipy grin.
“So what happened between you and that handsome boy who used to sit over there?”
Mia’s pale face showed a moment of confusion.
How could the shop owner know about her teenage feelings?
“Eyes can’t hide secrets, you know.”
“Though that handsome boy never came back after graduation…”
The owner continued chattering away, but Mia didn’t hear a word.
She’d thought she’d hidden it so well, but if even the shop owner could see through her, how could Dominic truly know nothing?
The same corner seat every time, always ordering the same flavor as him, even their perfectly timed “coincidental” encounters on the way to and from school.
She’d been like a fixed NPC in his high school experience, appearing in his line of sight day after day for three years. Someone with his photographic memory should have at least found her face familiar.
Yet after their marriage, he’d never mentioned it once. Even when she’d shown him their class graduation photo, his response had been bland,

unrecognizing.
Mia took a sip of the sweet soup. It tasted the same as before, but she couldn’t swallow it.
She pitied her younger self-so shy, so full of secret joy. And she pitied her current self-too worn down to even dare demand the truth.
The shop owner’s voice rang out again from the doorway.
“What’s the occasion today? You’re here too? I didn’t hear about any alumni reunion for your class.”
Mia looked up to see Dominic carefully helping Letty through the door.
The owner chatted excitedly with them, casually gesturing toward Mia’s seat:
“You got married? Is this your wife?”
“That girl over there is also from your class…”
She turned back to find the seat empty, only a full bowl of sweet soup left behind.
Puzzled, she muttered, “Where’d she go? She was just here.”
But Dominic’s attention was entirely on Letty. He helped her sit down, asking softly what flavor she wanted.
The owner smiled knowingly.
“You really treasure your wife! Even stickier than the high school couples in my shop. You found yourself a good husband, sweetheart.”
Letty blushed and nestled into Dominic’s arms. He smiled tenderly back, ordering for them before devoting all his attention to caring for her.
Across the street under an elm tree, Mia’s fingernails dug into her palms.
She was a coward. She’d done nothing wrong, yet the moment they walked in, she’d fled like a criminal.
She remembered how after their marriage, she’d once invited Dominic back to their old school for sweet soup. He’d frowned and shaken his
head.
“Mia, I’m very busy with work. If you want some, have the housekeeper buy it for you.”
“What’s worth remembering about high school? It’s all in the past-why dwell on it?”
Only now did she understand.
His memories had never included her, so naturally he didn’t want to revisit them with her.
Inside the shop, Dominic felt a burning gaze fixed on him from somewhere, but when he turned to look, he saw only an elm tree swaying in the
wind.
Seeing him distracted, Letty fed him a spoonful of sweet soup.
“What are you thinking about?”
Dominic shook his head, pointing toward the alley beside the elm tree.
“Do you remember that place?”

During his reckless youth, he’d offended many people. Finally, one day after school, several upperclassmen cornered him in that very alley.
He’d taken down the first wave, but more kept coming. Eventually, an iron rod struck him in the tailbone from behind, sending him to his knees.
The leader spat at him as the rod prepared to fall again.
Dominic thought he was going to die there.
Suddenly, a voice cracked from the alley entrance:
“The police are coming! Right here-someone’s bullying with weapons!”
The half-grown boys panicked, dropping their weapons and fleeing.
But no police entered the alley-only a girl in an oversized uniform. She ran fast, her ponytail bouncing behind her.
His head hurt too much, blood blurring his vision. He couldn’t see her face clearly.
He only remembered her choked voice calling his name:
“Dominic, you’re going to be okay!”
“Hold on, I’m calling an ambulance right now.”
“Don’t fall asleep, okay? Look at me, you…”
When he woke up, he was in the hospital.
A police officer sat beside him, pointing to a ponytailed girl outside the door.
“Thank God your classmate was there. You were bleeding pretty badly-could’ve been touch and go.”
The ponytailed girl entered and said quietly.
“My name is Letty Kane.”
ay, I should get back to class.”
apped out of his memories, looking at Letty beside him.
saved his life, so when she came to him for help, he’d agreed without hesitation to protect her.
“Letty, thank you for that day.”
Letty smiled back at him, but as she glanced toward the alley, something flickered unnaturally in her eyes.
