Chapter 9
On the day of the kidney transplant surgery, Dominic arrived at the hospital early in the morning.
He sat on the bench outside the operating room, his fingers unconsciously tapping his knee.
The nurse came to ask for the third time:” Mr. Cross, Miss Stone still hasn’t arrived?”
He glanced at his watch-it was only 7 AM.
“Wait a bit longer. She should be here soon.”
Time passed minute by minute. The corridor clock pointed to noon, but the operating room doors remained closed.
He suddenly stood up and rushed to the doctor’s office.
“What’s going on?”
“Mia hasn’t arrived yet. Shouldn’t your hospital contact the patient? What if we miss the kidney window?”
e attending physician was organizing medical records. Seeing him enter, his expression was puzzled.
Mr. Cross, wasn’t your wife’s kidney transplant cancelled?”
“Didn’t you know?”
Dominic grabbed the doctor’s collar.
“What cancellation?”
“Who authorized you to cancel it!”
The doctor was startled and quickly explained:
“Your wife signed a waiver for the kidney several days ago. She said it was your joint decision.”
“I was confused at the time too. After all, you’d been searching for a kidney for three years, and we finally found a match. I tried to persuade
her, but she was adamant, so I had to…”
“Impossible!”
Dominic roared:” Show me the waiver! I need to verify it myself!”
The doctor.tremblingly retrieved a document from the drawer.
Dominic snatched it away. The familiar signature made his eyes burn with pain.
It was indeed Mia’s handwriting.
But he couldn’t believe it!
He threw the document on the desk, his right hand trembling uncontrollably.
“I want to see the surveillance footage from that day!”

Chapter 9
The doctor quickly had a nurse pull up the security video. In it, Mia’s face was pale but calm. When signing her name in the waiver section, she showed not even a moment’s hesitation.
She had calmly signed her own death warrant.
Without even informing him.
Dominic stared at the screen, his voice hoarse and trembling.
“How much time did she… have left then?”
The doctor checked Mia’s medical records, his face filled with deep regret.
“Based on her physical condition when she signed, your wife had about a month left.”
“But I checked her treatment records at other hospitals. She recently suffered severe injuries, which was the final blow. Her bodily functions deteriorated rapidly-she probably only had three days left at most.”
Three days?
Dominic was thunderstruck.
hen he and Letty encountered her at the hospital, she only had three days left to live.
And three days later, he had forced her onto the boat, compelling her to jump into the sea to retrieve the urn.
“No… IMPOSSIBLE!”
He staggered to his feet, disbelievingly retracing the timeline.
“She’ll be fine! She will be!”
No wonder she had jumped into the sea so calmly!
No wonder she no longer cared about anything!
Dominic crouched on the ground, his head pounding as if it might explode, yet he still refused to believe it!
How could Mia bear to leave him like this!
His phone suddenly rang-an unknown number.
He answered numbly, the voice on the other end serious and solemn.
“Is this Mr. Dominic Cross?”
“This is Seattle Funeral Home. Regarding your wife’s funeral arrangements and her belongings, you need to come in person to receive them.”
The phone slipped from his fingers, crashing heavily to the floor.
He didn’t know how he got to the funeral home. Along the way, his mind was filled with images of Mia.
Her smiling face when she married him in her wedding dress, her thoughtfulness when she stayed up late with him at work and made him loving breakfast, and her happiness when she curled up in his arms, fantasizing about traveling the world together after the kidney surgery.
So many memories-so many that Dominic hadn’t even realized how much they had shared.
He clearly didn’t love her.

But at this moment, why did his heart hurt so much?
Until a staff member handed him a bracelet with their wedding rings as pendants.
From the day he put it on her finger, she had never taken it off.
“We received notification from Miss Stone three days ago to collect her body from the northernmost part of Coast, but the waves were too strong. According to professional assessment, the body may have been swept away by the current.”
“After several days of search and recovery, we only found this necklace with the rings. Because it has both Miss Stone’s and your initials, and it’s
a custom piece unique in the country, we were able to contact you.”
Dominic clutched the necklace tightly, as if seeing her happy smile on their wedding day when he put the ring on her finger by the sea.
She had hugged him and shouted to the ocean:” Dominic, marrying you is the happiest thing in my life.”
“I want to be with you for life, to grow old together, forever united in heart.”
Dominic’s legs gave way and he collapsed to his knees.
finally understood-from the beginning, she had chosen to end her life there.
st hurt so much he couldn’t breathe. Tears fell on the bracelet, accompanied only by his helpless gasping and bitter regret.
emembered the apology conference, when he used the kidney as leverage to force her to bow to Letty.
But by then, she had already signed the waiver.
He thought he held her life in his hands, that he could make her obedient and compliant. Even yesterday, he still believed she would swim
ashore, that she couldn’t possibly give up the kidney.
It turned out she no longer cared.
She wanted nothing anymore, not even him.
He couldn’t understand! WHY!
They had been so happy together-how could she bear to leave?
The staff member asked with concern:
“Mr. Cross, are you alright?”
But Dominic collapsed to the floor. His vision went black, and before losing consciousness, he seemed to see Mia in a white dress, standing in sunlight and smiling at him.
This time, he reached out his hand, but could never catch her again.
