Wait…Why Did Everyone I Love Suddenly Call Me a Bitch?! novel Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Standing on the sidewalk, I felt soul-crushed. Then my phone buzzed.

My severance package had cleared.

The tears finally broke through. I called Isaac,

The second he picked up, I lost it. “It happened again. I don’t know why! Why is everyone treating me like a pariah?! I haven’t done anything!”

He sounded devastated. “It’s okay. I’m dropping everything and flying back. It’s my fault-I shouldn’t have left for that business trip yesterday. I’m coming home. Baby, don’t cry.”

He sent me a screenshot of his ticket-he’d be landing in Vegas around 5 PM. “Don’t bother with the airport,” he said. “We’ll go straight to

dinner.”

“No, don’t,” I sniffled. “I don’t want to mess up your career.”

Isaac gave me that smooth, indulgent laugh. “What’s the point of having a man if you can’t lean on him? If I’m not there when you’re down, I’m useless. I’ll handle things on this end-don’t worry. I’m not letting go of my work, and I’m sure as hell not letting go of you.”

His confidence was like a sedative. The ache in my chest finally started to numb.

I was picking out a private booth at the restaurant, just wanting some quiet time with him.

Suddenly, my phone exploded with notifications from our inner circle.

“See you tonight, Wren! Chin up, Isaac’s worried sick.”

“Hey Wren, let’s get wasted tonight and forget all the drama!”

“You’re too good for that place anyway. Their loss. You’ll kill it wherever you go!”

The wave of support wiped out half of my misery.

I grabbed my gear and took a cab back to my place.

And I crashed hard.

When I was getting ready to head out that afternoon, Rowan came home.

I grabbed her arm and leaned on her. “I got sacked today.”

“What?” Rowan looked confused. “You must be having some serious bad luck lately. Maybe we should go see a medium or something this

weekend.”

I sighed. “At least I still have you.”

“I’m treating everyone to dinner. The whole crew is coming-good for networking. You in?”

I extended the invitation.

Rowan agreed instantly. “Of course! If you’re asking, I’m there.”

She always knew how to boost my mood.

Rowan and I took a cab to the restaurant.

We waited in the private room for the others.

Waiting for Isaac.

At 6:30 PM, there was finally a knock at the door.

I opened it.

A massive wall of camellias filled my vision-my favorite. Even though my chronic sinus issues and surgery meant I couldn’t smell a damn thing,

I was still overjoyed.

Isaac stood at the back of the pack, smiling warmly. “I love you, Wren.”

I pushed through the crowd and launched myself into his arms.

“I love you too.”

But Isaac didn’t hug me back.

Instead, he shoved me away with a violent force.

If my friends hadn’t caught me, I would’ve hit the floor.

I stared at him in disbelief.

Terror started crawling up my spine. I was terrified of being abandoned for the third time in forty-eight hours.

I wanted to cover her ears, but his cold-blooded voice reached me first.

“I had no idea you were this kind of person!”

The veins in his neck were bulging, his face twisted with a primal fury I’d never seen.

I was shaking with fear.

been holding back finally snapped.

back at him like a woman possessed.

What did I do?! What kind of person am I?! Why is everyone treating me like I’m a monster?!”

“Hah!” Isaac sneered, pointing at the door. “Get out. I never want to see your face again. We’re done.”

He hurled the massive bouquet at me, the heavy flowers hitting me hard. Rowan stepped forward, putting an arm around me. “Can’t you just talk? Why are you getting physical?”

Isaac looked at her with pure disdain, hands on his hips. “I have nothing to say to a bitch like her. Wren, get out of my sight right now, or I’m calling security.”

The word “bitch” finally blew out the last spark of hope in me.

“Don’t bother with security,” I said quietly. “I’m leaving.”

oured every last drop of my strength into that sentence before walking out like a hollowed-out ghost.

As I reached the curb, a body was suddenly sent flying through the air. A car had plowed into a pedestrian-it was a mangled, bloody disaster.

I stared at the carnage.

And then, in a heartbeat, everything clicked. The bizarre, nonsensical hell of the last forty-eight hours finally made sense.

Why everyone kept spitting the word “bitch” at me like it was a factual title.

Why I was being excommunicated from my own life.

I had the whole picture NOW!
