Chapter 5
I balled my fists and sprinted back to that VIP room like a woman possessed. I wasn’t just looking for answers, I was looking for blood.
Inside, Rowan was huddled next to Isaac, playing the “supportive friend” card.
“You and Wren have been together forever, Isaac. You were supposed to get married. You can’t just toss her aside over one mistake,” she cooed.
My entrance cut through the room like a blade.
Rowan stopped mid-sentence, her face a mask of fake-ass concern. “Wren? Are you okay? You look unstable. Let’s just go home, okay? I’ll take
care of you.”
Facing her little performance of sisterly love.
I raised my hand and delivered a backhand that nearly took her head off.
CRACK.
The sound was sharp and deafening.
The entire room went dead silent.
Isaac lunged to his feet, barking at me, “Are you serious?! The second you left, Rowan was the only one in your corner! She’s been loyal to you,
and this is how you pay her back? Wren, what the hell happened to you?!”
Rowan clutched her red cheek, her eyelashes fluttering like she was auditioning for a tragedy. “It’s okay… it’s fine. She’s just snapping under the pressure. Anyone would lose it after losing their job and their man. It’s fine if she hits me. We’re best friends. I can take it for her.”
The whispers started up again, toxic and judgmental.
“Jesus, Rowan is a saint. Why is she even friends with a snake like Wren?”
“Rowan, wake up! Your kindness is wasted on her. Trash like that only gets worse when you’re nice to them.”
Every time someone spat that word, it felt like a needle to my heart. But I wasn’t going to cry anymore.
I grabbed a wine bottle from the table and shattered it against the floor. “EVERYONE SHUT THE HELL UP!”
The room went still.
Rowan tried to grab my arm, trying to shuffle me out. “Let’s go. You’re having a breakdown. You shouldn’t be in public. Let’s just go home and
I’ll make you some soup.”
Isaac grabbed Rowan’s other arm, shielding her from me. He glared at me like I was a rabid animal.
“Don’t go with her, Rowan. She’s lost her damn mind. She’s going to hurt you.”
Tears blurred my vision as I looked Isaac in the eye. “Do you have any idea what it took to drive me to this?”
Isaac looked at me with pure, unadulterated disgust. “You dug your own grave, Wren.”
I pointed a finger at Rowan, shaking my head. “No… no, it wasn’t me! It was her! Everything leads back to Rowan!”
I lunged for her phone.

Rowan’s “victim” mask slipped for a split second. “Wren, you’re crossing a line! I’ve been the only one holding your hand through all your failures, and now you’re blaming me and trying to steal my phone? If you don’t back off, I’m calling 911!”
I didn’t flinch. “Do it. Call them. Let’s see who they haul away in cuffs.”
Rowan swallowed hard, her confidence wavering. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
I didn’t stop. I went for the phone again.
Rowan was short and frail-looking, it was like taking candy from a particularly evil baby. I snatched the device from her hand.
Isaac tried to step in. “Give her the phone back, now!”
I snatched up a jagged shard of glass from the floor and leveled it at his throat. “Take one more step and I’ll open you up.”
Isaac froze, staring at me like I was a genuine lunatic.
“You don’t belong in jail. You belong in a padded cell.”
He pulled out his phone, his thumb flying across the screen.
“Yes, I need an ambulance for a psychiatric emergency. I have a violent mental patient here. Get someone down here now.”
He barked out the address.
I managed to bypass her lock, but a quick sweep showed a clean history. She was smart.
I turned to Jacob in the corner. He was a tech prodigy-a hacker who could find a ghost in a machine.
I stood over Jacob, my voice cold. “Recover everything that was deleted from this phone in the last seventy-two hours. Now.”
Jacob shot a terrified look at Isaac.
Isaac gave a stiff nod. “Just do it. She’s a psycho, don’t provoke her any further.”
Jacob opened his laptop and his fingers started flying across the keys.
