Chapter 8
The videos disappeared from the internet.
Jackson must’ve pulled strings behind the scenes. Made sense-having his ex-girlfriend’s sex tape trending online? Bad for his image.
Jackson called me over and over again, each call more desperate than the last. But I didn’t pick up. Eventually, I just turned my phone off.
I picked up the coffee in front of me and threw it in Isabella’s face.
The shock of it snapped her out of her manic rage, leaving her stunned and dripping.
“Isabella, I used to hate you. But now I get it. You’ve already gotten what you deserve.”
“You’ll always know Jackson doesn’t love you. Everything you have is a lie-something you stole through manipulation and deceit.”
“You’ll spend the rest of your life terrified. Paranoid. You’ll drive yourself insane.”
Isabella looked up at me, eyes bloodshot, voice cracking.
“What are you so smug about? In the end… you didn’t win either.”
She was wrong.
I’d left the battlefield a long time ago.
I never fought for him. So there was nothing to win or lose.
I told my landlord I was moving out and started packing.
It was his property, after all, and there were people living below me. If I died there, it would bring them bad luck.
I moved back to my parents’ old house.
I hadn’t been back in so long that weeds had overtaken the yard.
But when I looked at those familiar walls, those old bricks… I could still see them. My parents. Jackson and me, back when things were easy. Happy.
Back then, he loved my mom’s apple pie. He’d spend hours playing chess with my dad, going fishing with him.
Everyone said we were perfect for each other. My parents were so proud-they’d found their daughter a smart, handsome, capable son-in-law.
Right before the accident, my mom had even slipped me her wedding bracelet. She wanted me to have it for my own wedding someday.
The burial plot cost me fifty grand. With what I had left, I paid a girl who lived nearby to check on me.
I told her to text me every day. If I replied, I was still alive. If I didn’t…
She’d come collect my body.
I’d thought about leaving the money to Chloe instead.
But I didn’t want to scare her.

Goodbyes are painful.
So if I was going to leave, I’d do it quietly.
No goodbyes. Just… gone.
