Chapter 7
Rowan started laughing like a total sociopath.
“We have the same degree, Wren! I’m just as good as you! So why do you get the golden ticket while I’m stuck in the dirt? The friends, the career, the perfect guy-I wanted to strip you naked and leave you with nothing. Just like me!”
“And let’s be real-I sent a few texts and your entire circle folded like a house of cards. Your ‘friends’ and your ‘man’ are a joke.”
Her words hit like a freight train. She was right.
If those bonds had been worth a damn, they wouldn’t have snapped over a few rumors.
Rowan looked like she’d completely lost her grip on reality.
She snatched the phone back, snarling. “So what? You have proof, big deal. Being a bitch isn’t a crime. But you? You slapped me. I’m calling 911.
I’ll have you arrested for assault and battery.”
Rowan started dialing, her thumb shaking with rage.
I just leaned back and let out a slow, cold laugh.
“Go ahead, dial the operator. Let’s see who ends up in cuffs.” There were no cameras in this VIP room. My palm prints weren’t evidence of
anything.
Every single person in the room was staring at me with soul-crushing guilt.
“No one in this room is going to say a word to the cops, Rowan.”
Rowan looked around the table, her voice cracking. “None of you? You’re just going to let her?”
The silence was deafening.
I walked out. I had a suitcase to pack and a toxic roommate to scrub out of my life.
Isaac was on my heels in a second.
He grabbed my arm, begging. “Wren, I’m sorry! I’m an idiot! But it’s only because you’re so beautiful-I was terrified of losing you! Let’s just
forget this. Let’s get married. Right now.”
The bruises from the bouquet he’d pelted me with were still throbbing.
I ripped my hand away. “Isaac, you don’t love me. You love the idea of owning me. We’re done. Permanently.”
He wouldn’t stop, his face full of pathetic, condescending pity. “I can fix you! Why didn’t you tell me about your nose? I have connections-top specialists, even experimental stuff from the psych ward contacts. Let me help you!”
I stepped back, looking at him like he was a stain. “I’ve lived in a world without scent for years. I’ll survive a world without you just fine. Stop following me, Isaac. You’re making me want to puke.”
Isaac collapsed onto the concrete, groveling like a dog.
“Just tell me what to do! Anything!”
Rowan sauntered out of the restaurant then, smirking like she’d won.

I took a breath and looked at Isaac. “You want to make it up to me? Have your ‘doctor friend’ do me a solid.”
If Rowan wanted to play God with my life, I was going to show her what hell looked like.
Isaac didn’t even ask what it was. “Anything for you, baby.”
The psych ward orderlies pulled up in a white van.
They walked up to Isaac. “Mr. Vance, where’s the patient? We’re here for the emergency eval.”
Isaac pointed a finger at Rowan, who was waiting for an Uber. “Her. She’s completely detached from reality.”
The orderlies closed in. “Ma’am, you’re coming with us.”
“Get your hands off me! I’m not crazy!”
She fought like a cornered rat, but she was no match for them. They hauled her into the van and locked the doors.
