Chapter 134
Victor’s blood ran cold, and a wave of icy sweat washed over his back.
He recognized the voices of Victor Jefferson and Claire Sun, two of Richard Bennett’s most trusted confidants at the Boston headquarters.
What were they doing at the Old Estate?
He didn’t have time to overthink. Quickly, he shoved the metal box into the sleeve of an old book on the top shelf and pulled out two thick volumes of books to conceal it. The spines lined up perfectly with the other books, making it impossible to detect any change at first glance.
Having done all that, he turned and walked to the desk, his fingers caressing the fountain pen his mother, Linda Bennett, had used back in the day. His gaze lingered on the family photo on the desk.
This photo was the last family portrait taken of the three of them when Clara Bennett was five years old.
After the photo was taken, Clara had made a point of placing the frame on the desk, wanting her mother to be able to see her anytime, anywhere.
Thinking of this, a layer of moisture welled up in his eyes, and even his breathing became softer.
The study door was pushed open, and Victor Jefferson and Claire Sun walked in one after the other, their leather shoes making dull sounds as they stepped on the old wooden floor.
“Mr. Bennett, what brings you back to Boston so suddenly?”
Seeing Victor Bennett standing at the desk, Victor Jefferson’s voice carried a hint of wariness, his eyes sweeping around the study.
Victor Bennett looked up, his eyes slightly red, his face full of melancholy.“There have been too many things lately. I missed my mother, so I came back to see her.”
“Have you and Mr. Bennett been having some disagreements?”
Claire Sun approached the bookshelf and casually fiddled with the spines of the books.
They had indeed received a call from Richard Bennett, asking them to come to the Old Estate to see if Victor Bennett had returned.
They hadn’t really believed Victor would sneak back, so they hadn’t taken Richard’s orders seriously. They were surprised to find him at
the Old Estate.
When Claire’s fingers brushed against the bookcover that concealed the metal box, Victor’s nerves tightened instantly, and he quietly clenched the pen in his hand.
“No, he’s my dad. Whatever decisions he makes, it’s for my own good.”
“It’s just… there’s been so much going on at the company lately. This ‘Blade‘ project hasn’t really taken off, and the pressure’s been intense. I just wanted to come back here, to feel closer to Mom. It helps me feel grounded.”
Victor Jefferson stood by the door, arms crossed, his gaze fixed on Victor, scrutinizing him.
“You and Mr. Bennett really are father and son. You both had the same idea.”
“He’s been thinking about the Mrs. too, but he’s tied up. He actually called and asked us to come grab one of her old things.”
“Indeed.”

Victor looked up, a hint of self–reproach in his eyes.
“Father’s been so stressed out lately because of Aunt Bennett; he’s worried that if things blow up, it’ll hurt Grand Horizon and the ‘Blade‘ project.”
“It’s all my fault. I can’t convince Clara to drop the charges.”
“Victor, could you try to talk to Dad? Tell him to take care of himself.”
“Of course.”
Victor Jefferson nodded, exchanged a subtle glance with Claire, and gave a nearly imperceptible nod.
Mend
Looking at Victor Bennett’s red–rimmed eyes, it seemed he genuinely sought solace at the Old Estate after suffering grievances from
Richard Bennett.
One couldn’t help but wonder what secrets lay hidden within the long–unoccupied Old Estate that made Richard so anxious.
Maintaining the facade, Claire Sun withdrew her hand and casually suggested, “Since you’re here, perhaps you could advise us on what
to send Mr. Bennett?”
Hearing this, Victor Bennett offered the pen he was holding.“Take this pen to Dad.”
“I remember he gave it to Mom on their tenth wedding anniversary.”
“Alright.”
Claire Sun took the pen, glanced up at Victor Bennett, and asked, “Aren’t you leaving, Mr. Bennett?”
Victor Bennett’s gaze fell upon a photo frame on the desk, his eyes clouding over.
“I want to stay a while longer.”
Hearing this, Claire Sun and Victor Jefferson exchanged a look, saying nothing, nor did they make any move to leave.
Silence descended upon the study, and no one spoke for a moment.
Victor Bennett distinctly felt their gazes sweeping across the study, and with each pass over the bookshelf, his heart skipped a beat. Just then, Uncle Lee walked in with a cup of hot tea. Seeing Victor Jefferson and Claire Sun, a knowing look crossed his face, and he said to Victor Bennett with a smile.
“Master Bennett, it’s chilly. Have some hot tea to warm up.”
He placed the teacup on the corner of the desk, his eyes catching the subtle oddity of the top shelf of the bookcase. But he subtly turned to Victor Jefferson, “Mr. Jefferson, Ms. Sun, why don’t you take some pictures in the backyard and send them to the Old Master?”
“Those flowers in the backyard were planted by Madam herself when she was alive. The Old Master would be overjoyed to see they’re blooming so beautifully this year.”
“Shall I take
you over there?”
Victor Jefferson nodded, glanced at the study once more, and seeing nothing out of place, gave Claire Sun a look. “Alright.”
The two turned and left, the study door closing softly behind them, their footsteps fading away.
Victor Bennett stood there in front of the desk, he wasn’t sure how long, until he heard the car start outside the courtyard gate, then he let out a long sigh of relief.

A gust of wind blew past, and he felt a chill down his back, realizing then that the shirt on his back was soaked with cold sweat.
He hurried to the bookcase, carefully took out the metal box, and stuffed it into his briefcase. As he zipped it up, his fingers were still
trembling slightly.
“Master Bennett, are you alright?”
Uncle Lee pushed the door open, his eyes filled with concern.
“I’m fine, Uncle Lee, thanks to you.”
Victor Bennett forced a smile, his voice still a little strained.“Did Victor Jefferson and his friend suspect anything?”
“I don’t think so.”
Uncle Lee shook his head.
Although he knew that Victor’s sudden return to the Old Estate was for more than just to honor his mother, Uncle Lee said nothing.
After all, compared to Richard Bennett, Victor was the one he should be looking after.
Hearing this, Victor nodded, took out his phone, and quickly dialed Ryan Walker’s number.
“Mr. Walker, I found it. It’s a locked metal box.”
“My father’s men were just here, and I’m afraid they’re still watching the place. Could you find a way to get your people in here to check
it out?”
Chicago, Military Medical Center, in a hospital room.
Ryan Walker received Victor Bennett’s call and walked to the window, his eyes sharp.“Okay.”
“Don’t panic. Stay where you are and protect the box. I’ll send someone to meet you.”
Hanging up, Ryan turned to Clara Bennett, who looked anxious.
He placed his large hand over her cold one, reassuring her, “Victor Bennett has the item. I’m sending someone to meet him. Don’t worry.”
“Okay.”
Clara smiled, feeling a bit more settled, when her phone rang.
The sudden sound startled her, and her hand trembled. Ryan tightened his grip on her hand and picked up her phone from the bedside table.
Seeing “Richard Bennett” on the screen, he frowned and looked at Clara.
“Answer it?”
“Yes.”
Clara’s eyes hardened, and she nodded.
She wanted to know what Richard wanted now.
Hearing this, Ryan walked back to the bedside, pressed the answer button, and turned on the speakerphone.

“Clara, it’s almost Linda’s memorial day in a couple of days.”
Richard’s voice came through the speaker, unusually gentle, but it made Clara uncomfortable. This year, for her memorial day, should we have a proper service for her together?”
“Spit it out.”
Clara’s voice was icy, devoid of
any
emotion.
She didn’t trust Richard. After she refused to drop the case, why would he suddenly be so kind as to arrange a memorial day for her
mother?
The other end of the line was silent for a couple of seconds before Richard said, “Clara, for the sake of your mother’s dedication to the Bennett Group, drop the case.”
“You wouldn’t want to see the Bennett Group collapse, would you?”
“Impossible.”
Clara refused without hesitation.
“Don’t be so quick to refuse!”
Richard Bennett chuckled softly on the other end of the line, as if he had anticipated Clara’s answer. “I have evidence of Robert Anderson’s misdeeds during his early years at Anderson Industries – embezzlement, falsifying accounts, all serious crimes.” “What do you think will happen to Anderson Industries if I make this public, or hand it over to the police?”
Clara’s eyebrow twitched slightly, a hint of sarcasm flickering in her eyes.
Her father was truly hypocritical and held double standards.
He feared something might happen to Bennett Group, so he morally blackmailed her by bringing up her mother’s past contribution Didn’t he realize that her mother had also put a lot of effort into Anderson Industries? It was, after all, where she came from.
However…
“Do you
think you can blackmail me with this?”
“Blackmail is too strong a word. I’m simply reminding you.”
Richard’s tone was light, but a hint of smugness was evident.
“If
you
drop the case, I can hide this evidence forever and never let anyone know about it.”
Ryan Walker turned around, walked to Clara’s side, and gently squeezed her shoulder, wanting to reassure her that he was there for her and that she didn’t need to be afraid.
Unexpectedly, Clara chuckled softly.“Richard Bennett, no matter what you say or do, I will not drop the case.”
“For me, nothing is more important than avenging my mother.”
“Since you have evidence of what Robert Anderson did, hand it over to the police or expose it.”
Perfect timing, as the police are still verifying the authenticity of the evidence she has regarding Robert Anderson’s scheme to short
Anderson Industries.
She’s been struggling to find new evidence to solidify the case against Robert for his actions.

Richard Bennett’s evidence, no matter how he obtained it, could be exactly what she needs to break through her current predicament.
Richard Bennett, clearly caught off guard by her response, was silent for a few seconds before his tone turned increasingly sinister. “Clara, don’t be a fool!”
“Respect is earned, not given.”
Clara’s gaze was icy.“If you want to release it, go ahead. I’ll be ready for anything.”
With that, she hung up the phone before Richard Bennett could say another word.
Ryan Walker looked down at her, a hint of admiration in his eyes, and gently stroked her hair with his fingertips.“Well done.”
Clara leaned into his embrace, nuzzling her nose against his shirt, her voice tinged with relief.“Robert Anderson has done so much evil; it’s long overdue for him to pay the price.”
“Yeah.”
Ryan Walker responded, picking up his phone to call Evan Taylor.
“Get a tech team to the Bennett Ancestral Estate ASAP, disguised as electrical repair workers. Help Victor Bennett open that metal box, but keep it quiet.”
“Understood, boss.”
Hanging up, Ryan leaned down and pressed a tender kiss to her forehead, his voice filled with unwavering resolve.“I won’t let anything happen to you, Clara.”
His kiss, warm and reassuring, was like a soothing balm, settling Clara’s heart completely.
Meanwhile, in a room at a five–star hotel,
Vivian Hayes sat on the edge of the bed, answering a call from Ethan Carter.
“Have you figured out what Clara’s weakness is yet?”
Ethan’s voice was low and icy.
“Not… not yet.”
Vivian feigned a scared tone.“Mr. Carter, the only major thing going on with Anderson Industries lately is their development plan for the next two years.”
“But Clara and Noah said it’s confidential…”
This, of course, was something Clara and Vivian had discussed yesterday after Clara learned that Ethan was having Vivian followed.
“Oh? Confidential?”
Ethan raised an eyebrow, sounding intrigued. It seemed to be important to Anderson Industries.
While it wasn’t as damaging as the surrogacy evidence Clara held, given how much she valued Anderson Industries, it might be useful.
“Find a way to steal that plan and send it to me.”
“But it’s confidential information at Anderson Industries…”

Seeing that Ethan was falling for it, Vivian suppressed a smile and said, “Besides, their security is too tight.”
You’ll have to find a way.”

There wasn’t a hint of compassion in Ethan’s voice. I’ve already got your parents‘ medical records, and I know your brother’s school address.”
Vivian was trembling with anger when she heard this.
She never imagined that the head of the Carter Group would resort to threatening people with their loved ones!
If Clara hadn’t arranged to bring her brother and parents back to the country in advance, who knows what might have happened!
“I’ll try.”
Her voice held a note of resignation. “But I need time. The plan isn’t with Clara. I’ll have to find a chance to get into her office to get it.”
I’m giving you two hours.”
Ethan’s voice left no room for negotiation.“In two hours, I want to see results. Otherwise, you’ll face the consequences.”
“Okay,” Vivian agreed.
After hanging up, Vivian looked at her phone screen, a cold smile playing on her lips.
She quickly opened WhatsApp, found Clara’s contact, and sent her the recording of their conversation.
Outside the Bennett Ancestral Estate, the night deepened.
Evan Taylor, accompanied by two technicians disguised as electrical repairmen in blue overalls and carrying tool bags, headed towards
the Old Estate.
In the shadows outside the Old Estate, Victor Jefferson and Claire Sun were squatting by the wall, smoking and watching the main
gate.
“Hey, Victor, don’t you think Mr. Bennett is being a little too cautious? What could possibly be in this dump?”
Claire shivered in the cold wind.
They had just called Richard Bennett to tell him that Victor Bennett had indeed returned to the Old Estate, but they hadn’t noticed anything unusual.
They were about to drive off for a drink when Richard Bennett told them to stay put outside the Old Estate, keeping an eye out for anyone else going in, or when Victor Bennett might come out.
Victor blew a smoke ring.“Just do what Mr. Bennett says and don’t ask too many questions.”
Through the haze of smoke, he saw three figures approaching in the distance. He frowned, stood up, and, with Claire, blocked their path.
“What’s your business here? This is a private residence. You can’t just go barging in.”
“The address is right, though.”
Evan pretended to glance at the form in his hand, then checked the house number. He smiled at the two of them, his tone casual.“Guys, could you let us through? There’s a fault in the wiring inside. We’re here to fix it.”

Victor Jefferson and Claire Sun exchanged glances, sizing them up.“Checking the lines? Who sent you?”
“The repair request came from the estate.”
Meru
Evan Taylor pulled out a pre–prepared repair order and handed it over.“You must be security. Why don’t you call inside and check?”
Then he muttered, “Big families, so many rules.”
Victor Jefferson took the repair order, using the light from his phone screen to examine it. The information was complete, and nothing seemed out of place.
“Hang on, I’ll check.”
He pulled out his phone and dialed Uncle Lee’s number.“Uncle Lee, I just passed by the Old Estate, and it’s all dark. Is there a problem with the electricity?”
“Are you sure you saw that right? The lights are on!”
Uncle Lee’s voice crackled through the phone. “But the motion–activated sprinkler system in the back garden is definitely on the fritz. I already put in a request for repairs.”
Victor hung up and nodded to Evan and the others.“Go ahead, but don’t go wandering around. Fix it and get out.”
“You got it, thanks, boss.”
Evan replied with a smile, leading the “technicians” into the Old Estate.
