Chapter 135
“This way, please.”
Uncle Lee, who had been waiting in the courtyard, greeted Evan with a gesture, seemingly oblivious to Victor and the other guard at the entrance. He led the trio straight toward the backyard.
After reaching the backyard, they finally approached the second–floor study through the back door.
Victor Bennett stood in front of the study window, watching the movements in the yard through a gap in the curtains.
Since the old estate had been uninhabited for years, only the main building was lit, leaving the courtyard in darkness.
If he hadn’t caught a glimpse of light flashing by the entrance, he wouldn’t have known someone was guarding the gate.
Hearing the footsteps, he turned around, and Evan Taylor managed to catch the fleeting panic in his eyes.
“Mr. Bennett, don’t worry, Mr. Walker sent us.”
Victor Bennett felt slightly relieved and pointed to the metal box on the desk.“The thing is there. The lock is quite intricate. Sorry for the
trouble.”
If the metal box wasn’t so bulky, he wouldn’t have called Ryan Walker, fearing that taking it out rashly would arouse suspicion from Victor Jefferson and the others.
The two men who followed Evan Taylor in exchanged glances and stepped forward, examining the box, which was about the size of a
computer screen.
It was an old mechanical lock, indeed difficult to crack.
“Let me try.”
One of them took out professional lock–picking tools, his fingers moving nimbly.
Victor Bennett stood aside, looking anxious.
Evan Taylor leaned against the doorframe, his eyes vigilantly watching the outside, his ears attentive to any sounds.
Time ticked by, each second stretching into an eternity. The only sound in the study was the faint clicking of tools against the lock’s
core.
“Got it!”
With a series of clicks as the gears turned, the mechanical lock on the metal box sprang open.
One of the men carefully lifted the lid of the metal box. Inside, a layer of dark red velvet lined the bottom, and three items were neatly arranged on top.
The first was a thick ledger.“Project Far Reach” was written on the cover in neat characters, Richard Bennett’s handwriting.
Victor Bennett reached for the ledger and opened it to the first page. Inside, every transaction was meticulously recorded: the date, amount, and the parties involved, all clearly laid out.
The second item was a partnership agreement bearing the signatures of Daniel Quinn and Richard Bennett. The document explicitly stated the profit–sharing ratio between the two men, as well as strict confidentiality clauses in case the scheme was exposed. The language was ruthless, sending a chill down one’s spine.

The third was a yellowed piece of paper with a list of over a dozen names. Each name was followed by an organ, implying whether they were organ providers or recipients.
The other man took out a professional scanner and quickly copied the contents of the ledger and the list.
Just then, Victor Bennett noticed something else beneath the velvet lining of the metal box.
He carefully lifted the velvet cloth, revealing a folded piece of paper.
The paper was yellowed with age, its edges frayed. The writing on it was faded, but he could still make out fragments of an address:“West Side…Old Pier… Warehouse No.3…”
The rest of the writing was blurred by water damage, illegible.
Victor Bennett held the paper, his brow furrowed.
What could this address be?
He was about to examine it more closely when a knock sounded on the study door.“Mr. Bennett, there seems to be some commotion
outside!”
Victor’s heart jumped into his throat.
Evan Taylor immediately went to the window, cautiously pulling back the edge of the curtain to peek out.
Shadows were moving outside, and it seemed a number of people were running toward the house.
“Is it Richard Bennett’s people, or Daniel Quinn’s?”
Evan’s expression changed as he looked at Victor.
“I… I don’t know.”
Victor, looking flustered, shoved the paper into his pocket and urgently asked the man with the scanner, “Is it done yet?”
“Almost, just a little bit more.”
The man sped up his work.
But before he could finish copying everything, a commotion erupted at the front door.
“You inside, come out!”
A rough voice boomed.
It was Victor Jefferson!
Victor Bennett’s heart pounded faster. He glanced at Evan Taylor, who nodded in understanding before drawing a dagger from his
waistband.
“Done!” The person with the scanner announced, quickly stowing the device and handing it to Victor.
Victor took the scanner, tucking it into his inside pocket. He then replaced the ledgers, agreements, and lists in the metal box, closed and locked it, and returned it to its original spot.
“Uncle Lee, go out the back door first.”
Victor said to Uncle Lee, who was near the door.

“Young Master, I won’t leave. I’ll stay with you.”
Uncle Lee’s tone was firm.
“No!”
Victor’s voice was urgent but resolute.“You’ll only slow us down if you stay. Go out the back. I’ll contact you later!”
Uncle Lee looked at Victor’s young but determined face and finally relented, giving a firm nod.
“Alright, Young Master. You must be careful!”
With that, he turned and quickly headed toward the side door of the study, his figure soon disappearing into the night.
“Bang!”

The front door of the villa was kicked open, and heavy footsteps instantly filled the old estate, accompanied by Victor Jefferson’s bellowing:“Young Master, how could you betray your family and collude with outsiders to do things that harm the Bennett family?”
If he hadn’t followed his routine and called Richard to report after Evan and the others barged in…
Richard had told him that the sprinkler system lines in the backyard had been broken for a long time. He wouldn’t have known the trickery otherwise!
“Tiger, what are you talking about?”
Victor clenched his fists, suppressing the unease in his heart, still trying to reason with Victor.
“Young Master, let’s not beat around the bush. What did you find in the study? Hand it over.”
Victor’s face was grim.
He was one of the first to follow Richard, so of course he knew about what Richard and Daniel had done twenty years ago. He was even
involved.
It was just that Richard guarded the information closely, and they didn’t know where it was.
If Richard hadn’t overheard Victor in the study on the phone and guessed what was happening, Victor might have actually fooled them
today.
Evan shielded Victor behind him and whispered, “Take the scanner and go out the back door. I’ll hold them off.”
“What about you?”
Victor touched the scanner in his pocket, his voice tight.
This was Boston, after all, originally the Bennett family’s territory. Although Ryan Walker had arranged for people to meet them, their numbers were limited, and the people outside couldn’t get in at all right now.
“Don’t worry about me. I have my ways of getting out of here.”
A cold smirk touched Evan’s lips as he pulled out a few smoke grenades from his toolkit.
Victor knew that with his limited fighting skills, staying behind would only hinder Evan.
Without another word, Victor turned and sprinted towards the back door.
“Surround him! Don’t let him get away!”

Spotting Victor, Victor Jefferson and the others in the hall gave chase.
“Go! Now!”
Evan darted in front of Victor Jefferson and his men, pulled the pin on a smoke grenade, and hurled it towards the doorway.
White smoke instantly billowed out, obscuring their vision, accompanied by curses from Victor Jefferson and his crew.
Victor Bennett raced out the back door, the sharp clang of metal and dull thuds of fighting echoing behind him.
He didn’t dare look back, forcing himself to run as fast as he could.
The icy mist soaked through his clothes, but it did little to quell the burning anxiety in his chest.
He dodged the men Victor Jefferson had posted outside, and with surprising agility, clambered over the courtyard fence, heading towards the rendezvous point Evan had directed him to.
Meanwhile, back in the Bennett family Old Estate, the smoke was beginning to clear.
Victor Jefferson and Claire Sun, along with a dozen of their people, brandishing clubs and looking menacing, surrounded them. Evan Taylor, clutching a dagger, stood shoulder to shoulder with the other two in a tight triangle, his stance resolute.
“You think three of
you can stop us?”
Claire Sun gestured for her people to move.“Go after him!”
“Stop the young master at all costs! He can’t be allowed to get away with it!”

The men surged forward, trying to bypass Evan and his companions, but Evan moved with the agility of a panther. He sidestepped, his dagger flashing, and precisely intercepted the man in the lead.
“None of you are going anywhere today!”
A scream pierced the air as the man dropped his club, clutching his wound and stumbling backward.
“Then beat them down and keep going!”
Victor Jefferson’s eyes hardened.
Seeing this, the others intensified their assault, their clubs raining down.
Evan spun and weaved, the dagger in his hand as if it had a life of its own. Each strike landed with deadly accuracy, and within moments, three men were writhing on the ground, howling in pain.
But they were too many, and Evan couldn’t defend against them all. A club slammed into his back, and he grunted, stumbling slightly. Seeing an opportunity, Victor Jefferson threw a punch at Evan Taylor’s face.“Let’s see how long you can last!”
A flash of coldness flickered in Evan Taylor’s eyes. Instead of retreating, he advanced, dodging the punch while thrusting the dagger fiercely into Victor Jefferson’s abdomen.
Victor Jefferson’s expression changed drastically. He retreated hastily, but the dagger still sliced a deep gash, and blood instantly soaked
his clothes.
“You’re asking for it!”
Both in pain and enraged, Victor Jefferson drew a short knife from his waist and joined the fray himself.

The two instantly became entangled. Amidst the flashing blades, Evan Taylor sustained another cut on his arm. Blood dripped from his fingertips, yet his eyes grew even sharper.
He knew he had to buy enough time for Victor Bennett to reach the rendezvous point safely.
Inside the hospital room, Ryan Walker was intently watching the location on his phone screen.
The scanner’s location was moving rapidly, approaching the rendezvous point.
“How is it going?”
Clara Bennett stood beside him, her brow furrowed, her voice tinged with worry.
Ryan Walker took her hand, the warmth of his touch reassuring her slightly.“Victor Bennett is almost at the rendezvous point. Don’t
worry.”
Ryan’s phone lit up with a message from the extraction team.
“Boss, we’ve got eyes on Victor, but Taylor and his guys are nowhere in sight.”
Ryan’s expression darkened. He fired back a quick reply:“Double the team and send them back to back him up, ASAP!”
He turned to Clara, forcing a smile, not wanting to spook her.“Victor’s safe. I’m sending a team to bring him back to Chicago.”
Meanwhile, back at the Bennett family’s Old Estate in Boston, Victor Jefferson clutched a makeshift bandage on his gut, his face ashen. Claire Sun was tending to the wound.
Richard Bennett’s roar nearly blew out the phone’s speaker:”That little shit Victor actually had the balls to team up with outsiders to screw me over!”
If he hadn’t noticed Victor acting shifty these last few days and kept tabs on him, if he hadn’t known Victor went back to the Old Estate and sent Victor Jefferson to check up on him, things would have been different.
He might’ve been rotting in prison, completely clueless as to how he
got there!
The thought sent a chill down Richard’s spine.“That ungrateful brat! Has no sense of the bigger picture.”
“What, he thinks he’s the only one who cares about Clara, who cares about his mother? What about me?”
If Victor wasn’t his only son, his only heir to the Bennett empire, he’d kick him out of the family and never let him darken their doorstep again!
Victor Jefferson, wincing from the pain in his abdomen, sat pale–faced on the sofa as Claire Sun bandaged his wound. “Mr. Bennett,” he said, enduring the ache, “the young master is still young. He might have been misled.”
“Don’t take it to heart. Once he thinks it through, he’ll realize your good intentions.”
“Misled?”
Richard Bennett scoffed.“How old is he? Can he still be easily misled? I think he’s just grown too confident and wants to be in charge
himself!”
Seeing Richard’s anger blazing, Victor didn’t dare to argue further and could only murmur, “Mr. Bennett, it was my negligence.”

Actually, he couldn’t be entirely blamed. The Bennett family had now established a firm foothold in Boston and had long since cleaned
up their act.
Those who had participated in the partnership twenty years ago were tight–lipped, and Richard Bennett used the excuse that the less they knew, the better, to keep them at bay. Usually, when nothing was happening, he wouldn’t allow them to come to the Old Estate.
This led to them not being clear about the situation at the Old Estate, which was why they had believed Uncle Lee’s words and let Evan Taylor and the others in.
Hearing Victor’s words, Richard Bennett’s anger subsided slightly. Victor had been with him for twenty years, from nothing to his current position, and was one of his most loyal old subordinates.
Thinking of the muffled groan he had heard through the phone, guessing that he must be seriously injured, Richard Bennett finally suppressed his anger, and his tone softened a little.
“How badly are you hurt?”
“Just a scratch, nothing serious.”
Victor Jefferson gritted his teeth, “It’s just frustrating that the kid got away. I can’t accept it.”
“Accept it, you must.”
Mr. Bennett was equally frustrated.
Victor Bennett had been under his nose for years. He couldn’t fathom where he’d found someone with such impressive skills!
He knew Victor Jefferson’s capabilities well, and for someone to injure him and escape from an encirclement of over a dozen people meant they were no ordinary individual.
“Have someone check the study to see if the metal box is still in the hidden compartment.”
Victor Jefferson’s heart tightened as he remembered the box. He quickly handed the phone to Claire Sun.
“Go upstairs and check if the thing’s still there.”
Claire Sun dropped the gauze, grabbed the phone, and rushed towards the second–floor study.
Victor Jefferson leaned back on the sofa, the wound on his lower abdomen still throbbing, his eyes turning incredibly sinister.
The contents of that metal box were the lifeblood of the Bennett family. If Victor Bennett had taken it and ruined Mr. Bennett’s plans, even as the eldest son, he wouldn’t get away unscathed.
And if the contents were made public, they’d all be finished. Did the young master really think this had nothing to do with him?!
“Mr. Carter, the hidden compartment hasn’t been touched, the metal box is still there!”
Following Richard’s instructions, Claire fumbled to open the hidden compartment in the bookshelf and felt a surge of relief when she saw the metal box sitting securely inside.
Downstairs, Victor breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing the news,
Richard’s voice on the other end of the line sounded lighter, “Open the box and see if anything is missing.”
Claire acknowledged and followed Richard’s instructions, twisting the hidden clasp at the bottom of the box and using a special needle to manipulate the lock cylinder.
After nearly five minutes of fiddling, she finally heard a soft “click” as the lock sprung open.

She lifted the lid, revealing the ledgers, partnership agreements, and lists neatly arranged on the velvet lining, untouched and exactly as
she remembered.
“Mr. Carter, everything’s here, nothing’s missing!”
“Honestly, with a lock this complicated, even if the young master brought in professionals, they wouldn’t have had time to open it. From the moment they entered the Old Estate to when we found them, it was only ten minutes or so.”
“Besides, the lock cylinder is incredibly intricate. Without special tools and skills, it’s impossible to open.”
Richard listened to this and considered it. He felt that it made sense, and breathed a sigh of relief.
No one had seen the contents of the metal box a stroke of luck amidst disaster!
