Chapter 66 Potatoes, Protons, and Professional Jealousy
“Energy -1. EXP +10. Target: Level 4 mutant sweet potato. Contamination Value: 1,023”
A Level 4 mutant sweet potato with a Contamination Value of over 1000. This was premium stock.
She was taking this one-home to grow.
Suppressing her excitement, she activated Harvesting.

Ding! “Energy -1. Harvest successful. EXP +20. Gained one Level 4 mutant sweet potato. Contamination Value: 36.”
A cluster of deep-purple vines appeared at her feet, their roots connecting to several enormous tubers. The largest was easily two and a half feet across. An absolute monster.
The others weren’t small either, each over a foot and a half in diameter.
“So, this is your ability?” A voice from behind nearly made her jump.
She spun around. Victor was standing six feet away, eyes fixed on the sweet potatoes at her feet.
“Yes. My Harvesting Ability. I can extract mutant plants from the ground.”
She’d thought this through before joining the Corps. Showing even part of her power meant inviting scrutiny.
But it was necessary.
She needed to grow stronger, to accumulate more attributes-and that meant building a team of allies to protect her while she was still vulnerable.
She also planned to use the food-harvesting angle as a cover for her truly extraordinary abilities.
Besides, the base had plenty of purification-type ability users. Her ability to extract low-contamination produce wasn’t that different from theirs.
So the sweet potatoes served two purposes: winter reserves and a way to attract loyal people.
This world was brutal. If she didn’t climb fast, she wouldn’t survive it.
“That’s a remarkable ability.” Victor’s praise was genuine. Privately, he was thanking every god he knew.
If some other unit had scooped her up first, he’d have been kicking himself for eternity.
He held out a small bottle. “You’ll need this. If your energy gets low, drink it.”
Reina took it–a high-grade energy recovery potion. Worth over 20,000 points.
She grinned from ear to ear. “Thanks, Captain Langley.”
She called Chloe’s group over to load the Level 4 sweet potatoes onto their own armored car, then threw herself back into harvesting with everything she had.

Chapter 66 Potatoes, Protons, and Professional Jealousy
An hour later, a five-ton truck was heaped to overflowing with massive purple-red sweet potatoes.
Thirty-odd mercenaries were drenched in sweat, grinning widely with their spirits sky-high.
Finished
Someone reported to Victor. “Captain Langley, the truck’s maxed out. We’re stacking on the roof at this point.”
“I know. I’ve already called for two more trucks-they’re en route. We’re not leaving until every last potato out of this field.”
Victor was riding high.
He’d already burned through three high-grade energy recovery potions for Reina. Leaving now would be a
waste.
!
Reina took a breather.
She sipped some water and surveyed the field.
They’d only cleared about a third-all along the edges. The center was darker, wreathed in a layer of black mist that felt distinctly ominous. Something was lurking in there. For now, she’d stayed away from it.
“Reina, hungry?”
Nash appeared, holding out a flatbread. “My wife made these. Egg and scallion.”
Egg and scallion?
She hadn’t tasted an egg in years.
“Thanks, Captain Bellingham.” Reina took a bite right away.
It was incredible. There was minced meat and chives folded inside.
“Your wife is an incredible cook.” Reina praised sincerely.
Nash sat down beside her. “When we get back, I’ll put in for a two-bedroom with a big terrace for you. Your squad members will be housed nearby-easier to coordinate.”
“Really? That’d be amazing.” Reina bowed her head to him. “Captain Bellingham, you are a genuinely good person.”
Finally, she’d have somewhere to put all her planting containers.
“How big is the terrace? Is it enclosed with glass?”
