Chapter 67 When the Vines Fight Back
Victor went quiet. The smile left his face.
That mission had been his fault. And on top of that, he’d lost the Level 5 crystal core to that bastard Zachary.
The memory lit a cold fury behind his eyes.
Zachary had brought five ice-type ability users-specifically to counter him.
Metal against ice-his ability had been completely neutralized. He’d watched the crystal core get taken.
At least, he’d since found a way to repair his ability damage: absorbing the purest grade of metal. Without that, he’d be a dead man walking.
He still didn’t know where Reina was getting her metal. A few hundred more pounds, and he could break through to Level 5.
Victor stood with his hands clasped behind his back, eyes tracking Reina’s slight figure in the distance.
Then chaos erupted.
Black vines erupted from the earth, weaving into a massive net that plunged straight toward Reina.
“No!” Victor exploded forward, his body dissolving into a streak of metallic light—a living blade aimed at the vines.
Reina had sensed it too, but it was already too late to dodge. The vines were faster than a Level 4 Agility user. They closed around her in an instant.
She slashed. The machete cut through every vine it touched, but there were too many, writhing in from every direction.
The vines snared her limbs. Several razor-tipped tendrils drove toward her body.
She couldn’t evade. She grabbed the nearest vine and activated her ability.
Ding! “Energy -1. Harvest successful. EXP +50. Gained Agility +2”
Attributes-from a mutant plant?
No time to process. She harvested again.
Ding! “Energy -1. Harvest successful. EXP +50, Gained one Level 5 mutant sweet potato vine. Contamination Value: 48.”
A deep-red vine materialized in her hand, still sporting a few crimson leaves.
The tendrils that had been drilling into her body froze-and pulled back.
The vines binding her loosened, sliding away.

Relief flashed through her for half a second. Then the pain hit all at once.

She looked down. Her suit was punctured in multiple places, blood seeping through. Her wrists were torn. Blood was soaking into the Level 5 vine in her hand.
The vine was drinking it in.
She almost dropped it in horror-but remembered that the other vines had been afraid of it. She gripped tighter.
Victor reached her, greatsword flashing, hacking at the vines still surging from the edges..
They severed. Regrew. Severed again. Regrew again. Relentless.
Then the black vines switched targets-swarming Victor.
Reina rushed in to help.
One hand clutching the Level 5 vine, the other swinging her machete, she and Victor fought back-to-back until the remaining tendrils retreated into the black fog at the field’s center.
“Are you okay?” Victor scanned her injuries the moment the threat cleared. “Are you badly hurt?”
He tossed her a high-grade healing potion. “Drink it. Now.”
Reina downed it in one gulp. Warmth flooded through her body.
Interesting-this potion felt almost like a healer’s ability. She’d have to look up the ingredients later.
“Reina, take a break. This area is too dangerous. I’ll have the team clear it with flamethrowers first.”
Victor signaled for soldiers to bring the flamethrowers forward.
Reina nodded and walked back, the vine still in her grip.
It was coiling around her hand like a living thing-two crimson leaves swaying, probing for blood on her skin.
Suppressing a shudder, she harvested it one more time.
Ding! “Energy -1. Harvest successful. EXP +20. Gained one Level 5 mutant sweet potato vine. Contamination Value: 0. Bonded.”
Bonded? What did that mean?
Her brain was about out of processing power.
The new vine still coiled around her, but it had stopped seeking blood,
The original vine-now drained-had turned ashen and limp, like a dead twig.
