Chapter 68 One Potato, Two Potato, Level 5 Potato

Her heart was still pounding. That had been way too close.

Ursula and Sasha hurried over with a fresh protective suit. “Here-yours is shredded.”

Reina changed into the camo suit they’d been issued that morning and told Ursula and Sasha, Stay in the vehicle. Guard the sweet potatoes-the Level 4 ones are ours. Don’t let anyone near them.”

The two women glanced at the truck, spotted someone peering inside, and ran.

By now, Victor’s team had finished scorching the area and uncovered two massive high-leyel mutant sweet potato plants.

They were proving impossible to dig out.

“Reina! Over here!” Victor waved her over.

“Coming!”

On the way over, she warned Chloe, “Stay out of the ultra-high contamination zone. Getting infected is no joke.”

Chloe nodded reluctantly, watching her squad leader disappear into the haze.

Reina reached Victor and saw two colossal root clusters, each over a foot and a half across, bulging from the scorched earth.

The vines had been burned away, and the tops of massive sweet potatoes were visible beneath the soil.

“Go try it. See if you can harvest them out,” Victor said.

Earlier, he’d had the team try digging, but the more they dug, the bigger the thing seemed to get. Left with no choice, he had someone bring over a chisel, hoping to break that giant sweet potato apart.

But the chisel couldn’t dent it at all. The thing was like a boulder. Hard as hell.

“On it.” Reina approached the two giant sweet potatoes.

She covertly threw an Eye of Insight,

“Energy -1. EXP +10. Target: Level 5 mutant sweet potato. Contamination Value: 2,890”

It was nearly 3,000. She’d never encountered a Level 5 plant this contaminated. Her pulse spiked.

She moved closer and activated Harvesting.

Ding! “Energy -1. Harvest successful. EXP +50. Gained Physique +2.”

She bit down on the grin threatening to break across her face. Again.

Ding! “Energy -1. Harvest successful. EXP +50. Gained one Level 5 mutant sweet potato crystal core. Contamination Value: 98.”

A fist-sized red crystal appeared in her hand, pulsing with light.

Gasps erupted around her. “She got the crystal core out!”

“Squad Leader Reina is insane!”

Victor and Nash materialized at her side, staring at the core. “How did you do that?”

“No idea.”

Reina held the glowing crystal and cursed inwardly.

Why didn’t she have a storage space? If harvested items went straight into an inventory, none of this would be a problem.

And now everybody had seen it. Which meant she’d almost certainly have to hand it over.

Sure enough, Victor plucked the core from her palm. He and Nash passed it between them, scanning it with their smartwatches..

“The Contamination Value is under 100? One purification pass, and this thing could be absorbed directly.”

Nash’s eyes were locked on the crystal like a man possessed.

Victor shot him a withering look and stowed the core in his own belt pouch. “Reina harvested this. She gets the first claim. Only if she passes does it go to anyone else.”

Nash deflated, stealing one last longing look at Victor’s waist..

“Eyes off. It’s not yours.” Victor nudged him aside and turned back to Reina, who was already moving to the second root.

Since the first one was spent after giving up its core, she moved on to the next target.

Ding! “Energy -1. Harvest successful. EXP +50. Gained Energy +2.”

Ding! “Energy -1, Harvest successful, EXP +50. Gained Energy +2,”

Looks like this mutant sweet potato had been the one causing trouble just now.

Two consecutive Energy harvests pushed her base Energy to 87-nearly Level 4 territory,

She kept her face blank and went for a third harvest.

Ding! “Energy -1. Harvest successful. EXP +20. Gained one Level 5 mutant sweet potato. Contamination Value: 35. First-time consumption permanently increases Physique by 2. Effect doesn’t stack.”

A mountain of purple-red sweet potato materialized-easily several hundred pounds.

“She got it!”
