Once they were ready, Seren and Lennon set out. It wasn't rush hour, so the drive was smooth. By four in the afternoon, they had arrived at the Brewer family estate.
Before they even reached the main house, a man came out to greet them. He was tall and slender, dressed in a khaki shirt and dark gray trousers, with a gentle, clean-cut air about him.
It was Nadine's older brother, Sylas Brewer.
Seren was surprised. She hadn't expected Susan to call Sylas back as well. He worked out of town and rarely came home outside of major holidays. It had been a long time since she'd last seen him. But Seren had practically grown up in the Brewer household. While she wasn't as close to Sylas as she was to Nadine, they had a warm, familial bond. When they were children, Sylas had treated her like a true younger sister, always making sure she got whatever he brought for Annora and Nadine. She had always respected him deeply.
She broke into a smile and pulled Lennon forward. "Sylas!" she called out warmly.
Only then did she notice the person standing behind him.
Swain.
She was surprised to see him there but said nothing, her gaze flicking away indifferently. In the past, she would have forced herself to offer a polite greeting, but now that they had cut ties, such formalities were unnecessary. Seren was a person of clear-cut principles; she was polite, but not to just anyone.
Seren greeted everyone warmly.
Once she had made her rounds, Nadine bounced over, a mischievous grin on her face. "I told my mom you two would show up right at dinnertime, and I was right!"
She then produced a gift box from behind her back, her eyes sparkling. "Here, this is for you. Go on, open it! I promise you're going to love it."
